Eureka Math was developed specifically to meet the new standards and is the only comprehensive curriculum fully aligned with the standards for grades K-8. Eureka Math was written by a team of teachers and mathematicians who took great care to present mathematics in a logical progression from grade PK—12. This coherent approach allows teachers to know what incoming students already have learned and ensures that students are prepared for what comes next.
BASD has selected Eureka Math as the backbone of our math curriculum for a variety of reasons, including the following:
Eureka Math ...
The material Eureka Math is based on was originally created through a partnership with the New York State Education Department. Their review team, including renowned mathematicians who helped write the new standards and progressions, strengthened the already rigorous development process.
As with any resource, Eureka Math pacing must be customized to meet the demands of the PA Core Standards and PSSA timeline as well as the needs of our learners. Some lessons may be omitted, modified, or combined in order to meet those demands. In some cases, entire modules are removed or presented out of sequence.
Multiple assessment measures will be used throughout Eureka Math. Tools such as daily problem sets, quizzes, fact fluency probes, classroom observations, and exit tickets will be used to guide instruction. Mid-module and End of Module Assessments will more formally evaluate student growth and achievement.
BASD will continue to utilize our standards based reporting of 4, 3, 2, 1. Please remember that 4, 3, 2, 1 is not directly connected to A, B, C, D. Standards based grading is aligned to a student’s performance/growth over time and is relative to a specific grade-level standard being assessed not a percentage of problems correct. (as in 90-100% = A, 80-89% = B, etc.)
For the 2018-2019 school year, BASD has added a Trimester Grade in Grade 5 Math ONLY. The percentage will provide an overall view of a student’s progress during the trimester. Scores from assessments, quizzes, and other classroom-based assessments are used to calculate the trimester grade.
