Civic Action Project 2023

The Importance of Teaching Teen Mental Health at AUHSD Schools

As teen mental health has worsened over recent years, resources needed to help teenagers handle mental health issues must be improved at Loara High School and other schools in the Anaheim Union High School District. Teenagers are at a higher risk of developing depression and similar disorders, of decreased performance quality in school, and of built up anger that can lead to violence which can be prevented with proper mental health education.

Actions Taken

Our first action was to listen to our peers and see if they also noticed a problem with the Mental Health resources available on campus. The survey was sent to all students on campus.

We interviewed our credentialed health teacher, Mrs. Glabb, to see her own opinion on the health curriculum. This helped us understand her stance on teen mental health being taught in the classroom.

In order to raise awareness on the issue, my group decided to email our superintendent to see what his approach would be to resolving the issue.

Using our summarized research, an educated and thorough video was created with the intention to be  shown to students over the district in order for them to understand the importance of being taught Teen Mental Health in the classroom.

We created a website to display all of our findings throughout this project.
