A school counselor is an advocate for students. Their role is defined partly by what they are not. A school counselor is not a disciplinarian. A school counselor does not academically assess students and assign grades. The purpose of the counselor is to work with and for students to ensure access and support in their journeys.
The counseling program consists of short-term individual and group counseling programs to provide support for all students at the school.
The counseling program is comprehensive because it works in all areas of student development including academics, social-emotional health, post-secondary college and career planning, community outreach, parent connection and advocacy.
A comprehensive program works both preventatively and in response situations to crisis that occur on campus and at home. The goal is to provide all students and families skills to solve any problem from college planning to social/emotional needs.
Counselors in a comprehensive program follow ASCA Ethical Standards, acting in the best interest and safety of the student.
