Career Interest Inventory: O*NET
The O*NET Interest Profiler can help you find out what your interests are and how they relate to the world of work. You can find out what you like to do.
The O*NET Interest Profiler helps you decide what kinds of careers you might want to explore.
Name/Title of Resource: CareerOneStop.org
Description of Resources: “...provides key information on occupations in technical fields. Information on this website is current and quite rich, including fastest growing occupations, occupations with declining employments, employment trends based on growth rates and earnings by region, and occupations by required education level” (Curry & Milsom, 2017, p. 52). Certifications, certification agencies and career exploration is also available (Curry & Milsom, 2017).
Instructional Steps to Access and Use the Resource: Available online, updated regularly by the U.S. Department of Labor. No sign-up or sign-in is required for use.
Rationale: College, being both the primary goal and (sometimes) only plan for high school students has been overvalued, missing middle-skills job training and certification areas (Zehr, 2011).
Description of Potential Use: (Potential for Non-university high school graduate) This website allows a counselor to learn about occupations, paths to work, certifications and general career information to help a student thinking about an alternate graduation plan.
Name/Title of Resource: Amphi Internships
Description of Resources: This website includes internships posted at the local level, searchable by major and/or location. It also includes links for educators and students. Students can search by major or interest.
Instructional Steps to Access and Use the Resource: Go to the website. Type the location and/or field.
Rationale: Many young people need exposure and experience. Sometimes, unpaid internships are the best option. If their “cultural capital” is such that they don’t have support around them who can help navigate professional career communication and socialization, the counselor is so obligated (Curry & Milsom, 2017).
Description of Potential Use: (Potential for all students, usable during high school) Individual counseling or classroom instruction. I imagine sharing the resource in group and classroom formats. For students with special situations (DACA, for example) I could work individually or with their family to research potential internship opportunities.
Name/Title of Resource: collegescorecard.ed.gov
Description of Resources: This website helps college going students to compare public, private, two and four year universities with each other on comparable measures.
Instructional Steps to Access and Use the Resource: A simple website, enter search criteria, filter and sort.
Rationale: For students going to a university, steps need to be taken to be sure that the student gets what they expect, finishes and has career prospects after college graduation. Choosing a destination should be based on research into major areas, career placement services, school scholarships and competitions, campus tours and, of course, cost (Ryan, 2007).
Description of Potential Use: (For clearly college bound students.) Students, who may have no or little knowledge about colleges outside of their local area, can use this site alone or in conjunction with a counselor to find colleges that might fit their needs.
