BRIEF PROFILE OF THE BARANGAY
Barangay Banquero, Reina Mercedes, Isabela has been identified as one of the depressed barangays in the province if not throughout Region 02 considering its living or economic condition, educational background of the people and location of the place, and the like. This barangay is 12.5 kilometers away from the Poblacion and can only reach it by crossing the Magat River through a Banca, a means of transportation, which is very risky and dangerous during the rainy season. It is 20 Kilometers away from riding a tricycle and bus via Gamu, Naguilian, and Cauayan City Road, going around is expensive implying that the said barangay is in need of primordial attention.
People residing in came from Cagayan tribes as they composed the greater number of inhabitants. There are 405 Family Heads, 60% Gaddang, 30% Itawis, and Ibanag, and 10% llocano and others.
Before, barangay Banquero covered a limited lot area as its territory. The Tenyete del Barrio then was Fernando Cortez 1960-1962 immediately followed by Santiago Guntapay 1962-1964, Mererao, Gamu its adjacent barangay led by Tenyentedel Barrio Nicanor Vidal (1960-1962) followed by Fernando Atuan (1963-1964), the two barangays were united and join as one as per Provincial Order when Mererao was taken as part of Reina Mercedes during the Administration of Alkalde Municipal Santiago P. Respicio. The boundary established between Reina Mercedes and Gamu was Patak Creek. The said two (2) barangays are now known as Banquero. When the election came for Tenyente del Barrio rivals were Andres Cabanos of Banquero and Francisco Gannaban of Merrerao.
New Banquero has a total land area of more or less 480 hectares composed of agricultural land of 450 hectares and residential land of 30 hectares. Its neighboring Barangays are Santiago to the west, Turod to the south, Mallatang Grande to the east, San Bonifacio to the northwest, and Furao to the northeast. It is subdivided into three (3) Purok namely: Abbatuan, Mererao, and Calsada. The Barangay has total population of 8,000: male consist of 3,500 or 43.75% and female total 4,500 or 56.25% Barangay Banquero produced product are corn, tobacco, mongo beans and peanut.
