On June 16th there was a final event held live at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava. On the contrary to the corresponding part of the competition, this was a live event with more than 50 students arrived. They presented their skills learbned during the year by solving the series of missions in the complex problem of planetary exploration robotic rover.
Part of the event was also the excursion into the robotic laboratories and finally the award ceremony where the best teams received their trophies. See the rules and missions below, together with some photos and result table.
We also discussed the options for the next year of this competition and hopefully will see all the teams again!
The exploration rover has landed on an unknown planet. The crew of the mother ship needs to collect information about the environment, remove dangerous obstacles, deliver supplies, activate communication systems, and prepare a base for future colonists.
Each mission represents one task necessary for the survival of the expedition.
The robot always starts from the base. Between individual missions, the robot may be picked up and returned to the starting position. However, every time the robot is touched by a human hand, the team loses 1 point. Therefore, teams achieving the highest score will be those able to complete multiple missions in a single run.
After landing, the rover discovered several containers of radioactive waste. They represent a serious danger for future colonists and block access to other areas of the planet.
Task: Yellow cubes represent radioactive waste containers. The robot must push them away so that they no longer touch the black track with any part of their body.
Points: 5 points for each removed cube (maximum 15 points)
Mission 2: Activate the Navigation Beacon
The mother ship cannot determine the exact position of the rover. The navigation beacon must be activated by releasing the power unit.
Task: The robot must move the lever of the power unit so that the yellow ball representing the energy source moves down.
Points: 20 points
Mission 3: Find a Suitable Location for the Base
Scientists need to determine the best place to build the first human base. Different areas along the route must be explored. The most important requirement for the future colony is the presence of water.
Task: The robot must explore the colored areas and find the blue field representing a water source. After finding it, the robot must send its coordinates using a light and sound signal. There is no single correct solution.
Points: 15 points
Mission 4: Explore the Planet Surface
To create a map of the planet, the rover must explore as much of the surface as possible.
Task: The robot must autonomously follow the black route and reach as many checkpoints as possible. The checkpoints are marked with numbers 1 to 5.
Points: 3 points for each reached checkpoint (maximum 15 points)
Mission 5: Deliver the Rock Sample
During exploration, a rare mineral was discovered. It may contain important information about the origin of the planet.
Task: The red cube representing the rock sample must be delivered to the laboratory. It is enough to push the cube into the marked target area.
Points: 20 points
Mission 6: Communicate with Aliens
The exploration team has detected signs of intelligent life. The first contact attempt must be prepared.
Task: The robot must reach station number 3 and send a message to the aliens. It may use any combination of lights, sounds, display messages, or movements. There is no single correct solution.
Points: 15 points
Mission 7: Emergency Evacuation
One of the astronauts has moved away from the base and needs assistance.
Task: The robot must transport the astronaut safely to station number 4.
Points: 15 points
Mission 8: Ancient Artifact
Explorers discovered remains of an alien civilization. The artifacts are blocking the planned route, but they must not be damaged.
Task: The robot must move the artifacts away from the track. An artifact is successfully moved if it no longer touches the track. The ball must not fall during the manipulation.
Points:
5 points for each successfully moved artifact
-2 points for each damaged artifact
Mission 9: Communication Failure
A strong electromagnetic storm damaged the navigation system and interrupted the marked route.
Task: The robot must continue driving through the missing section of the track and successfully find the continuation of the route.
Points: 10 points
Mission 10: Dangerous Object
The rover detected an unknown object that may represent a threat. Before continuing the mission, it must be safely identified.
Task: The robot must not touch the object (blue cube). If it stops in front of it and warns about it by flashing the blue light of the ultrasonic sensor, the judge will remove the object and the route will become safe.
Points:
+10 points for successful detection and warning signal
-5 points for each contact with the object
Secret Mission
The mission description will be revealed during the competition. The exact task may be adjusted depending on the competition situation.
