We are thinking global and acting local under the Living Economy imperative, sourcing materials closer to Upper Dublin rather than across oceans. The intent of Living Economy Sourcing is to foster local communities and businesses, while minimizing transportation impacts. Combating carbon emissions by minimizing transportation mileage is increasingly important, among a warming climate only accelerated by fossil fuel usage across the nation.
The Third National Climate Assessment identifies, “In 2010, the U.S. transportation sector accounted for 27% of total U.S. greenhouse gas emissions, with cars and trucks accounting for 65% of that total. Petroleum accounts for 93% of the nation’s transportation energy use.” Policies like limiting under 5000km sourcing to 25%, under 1000km sourcing to 30%, and under 500km sourcing to 20% or more, are imposed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions within creating the HIVE! We are first taking the community’s donated mangled objects from Hurricane Ida’s devastating wrath upon our community, and upcycling them onto our site, giving them another life for the community to use and enjoy!
Our products will be coming mostly from Pennsylvania, specifically the Montgomery County area, seen here on our Global Sourcing map, which has been designed to track the locations of each plank of wood, screw, herb, wood-chip, etc. featured in our space to ensure each materials budget restriction is fulfilled. Our carbon emissions can be minimized, while supporting local partners and businesses within Montgomery County, specifically the Fort Washington area! We have a materials spreadsheet, where we listed all the materials needed and the locations they are coming from. Stores or homes like Kate's Corners for our native plants, wood-chips from behind the Fort Washington Elementary School for our pathways, and furniture, like benches, that we up-cycling from members of the community.
