Hunters voice opinions on 2023 deer season

Many faculty members and students partake in deer season. The Missouri rifle season is Nov. 11 through 21. Hunters like to kill deer for a source of food.

The 2023 season has had weather that many consider to be good, but others have a different opinion on it.

“Overall, this season has not had great weather. It needs to be colder,” Mr. Theoron Viox said.

The hunters education program has been completed by almost all hunters, but many do not know what to expect before completing the program.

"I completed it all in one day, and it probably took like five hours or something like that online,” senior Russell Clayton said.

The food that is made from deer meat is one of the most popular reasons that people like to hunt.

"I normally make bologna, deer sticks, and jerky,” Mr. Viox said. “I like to mix cheese and jalapeno with bologna and sticks. I also make burgers, brats, and loin.”

The best part of hunting for many is the big deer that are seen and shot. Killing an impressive deer is a great feeling that hunters chase.

"I saw about 120’ 8 point, but he never walked in, so I never had a shot at him,” Viox said.

Choosing the right rifle to hunt with is an important decision to make before hunting. There are hundreds of different makes and models of guns to choose from. Clayton likes to use a .270.

"I personally like using a .308 or 30-06, as I feel they have the best stopping power for deer,” Viox said.

Highway 32 construction causes students problems.

Highway 32 construction has been a struggle for students. Throughout the school year, many students have been late due to the stoplights/construction. Over the summer, construction started to repair the highway.

Now, the construction has turned into stoplights, which leaves many to wonder if they will stay for good or be temporary.

“I work down 32 everyday, so the construction will sometimes make me late if I am at a red light at the wrong time, I think traffic flows much smoother without the lights,” Austin said.

The lights and construction is not only a problem for Austin. Senior Grant Williams is one of many that faces the struggle of the lights every morning. His opinion on the lights is shared amongst many students.

“No, I think it is a terrible idea, It makes me late to school everyday,” said Williams when asked about the stoplights.

Students have started running the light at the bridge when it is red as a result of making it to school or work on time. Williams says he has run the red light before.

“Well yeah, everyone does,” Austin said.
