📚✨ DID YOU KNOW??? (Teacher Edition) ✨📚
As educators 👩🏫👨🏫, we ask students to take notes 📝 for a variety of reasons. While most students comply 👍, they often stop at simply writing things down—without revisiting or using those notes later 📄➡️🚫.
When students understand why they are taking notes 🎯 and are given opportunities to use them, engagement and learning increase 📈. This is where the 5 Phases of Focused Note-Taking come in—a structured approach that helps students move from passive writing ✍️ to active thinking 🧠💡.
Goal: Get the important ideas down in real time ⏱️
Teacher Moves 👩🏫:
Model identifying key ideas vs. details 🎯
Use think-alouds to show decision-making 🧠💬
Provide structured formats (Cornell notes, guided notes) 📄
Pause for processing and writing time ⏸️✍️
Student Actions 👇:
Capture main ideas—not every word 🚫📄
Use abbreviations, symbols, and visuals 🔤➡️🖍️
Listen for cues like repetition, emphasis, or “this is important” 🚩👂
👉 Reminder: Notes at this stage do NOT need to be perfect—just captured!
🔄 Phase 2: Process Notes (Step #2)
Goal: Interact with notes to improve understanding 🧠
How often do we see notes stuffed in backpacks 🎒, never to be looked at again?
Research on the “Rate of Forgetting” shows:
⏱️ After 20 minutes → students forget ~58%
📅 After 24 hours → only ~33% retained
💥 The solution? Processing notes!
Strategies to Teach 📌:
Chunk information into sections 📦
Add annotations, symbols, and questions ✏️❓
Highlight key ideas ✨
Add/delete information ➕➖
Teacher Tip 🍎:
Encourage students to revisit notes within 24 hours ⏳
Provide annotation tools or templates 🛠️
Build reflection routines into lessons 🔁
🔗 Phase 3: Connect Thinking (Step #3)
Goal: Deepen understanding by thinking beyond the notes 🌍🧠
Students make connections through inquiry and questioning ❓ using higher-level thinking (inspired by Costa’s Levels).
Inquiry Strategies 💡:
❓ Comprehension: What don’t I understand yet?
🔮 Prediction: What would happen if…?
⚠️ Anomaly: What doesn’t make sense?
🧪 Application: How can I use this?
🗺️ Planning: What should I do next?
Other Ways to Connect Thinking 🧠:
What is missing? 🔍
What connections can I make? 🔗
How does this relate to what I already know? 📚
What patterns do I notice? 📈
What do I think or feel about this? ❤️
What examples can I add? 🧩
How will this be useful? 🎯
🧠 Phase 4: Summarize & Reflect
Goal: Pull out the most important ideas and think about learning 💭
Teacher Moves 👩🏫:
Model summary sentences or paragraphs 🖊️
Ask reflective prompts:
“What is the most important thing I learned?” ❓
“How does this connect to other info I know?” 🔗
Give class time for reflection and discussion 🗣️
Student Actions 👇:
Summarize in their own words ✍️
Highlight key points ⭐
Reflect on understanding and confusion 🤔
Add personal insights or examples 🧩
Goal: Use notes to complete tasks, solve problems, or extend learning 🌎
Teacher Moves 👩🏫:
Assign activities where students use their notes 💡
Encourage group work or projects that reference notes 👫🧑🤝🧑
Show how to turn notes into study guides, flashcards, or reference tools 📑
Student Actions 👇:
Apply notes to classwork, homework, projects, or test prep 📝
Make real-world connections 🌎
Use notes to teach themselves or classmates 👩🎓👨🎓🏫 Schoolwide Focus Reminder
The AVID Site Team encourages all teachers to:
🧾 Post the 5 Phases of Focused Note-Taking in classrooms
🎯 Reference the phases during instruction
🔁 Intentionally guide students through each phase
When students consistently engage in all phases—not just writing notes—they become more independent, reflective, and successful learners 🚀🎓.
✨ Bottom Line:
Note-taking is not just about writing—it’s about thinking, processing, and applying. When we explicitly teach each phase, we help students turn notes into meaningful learning 💡📚.
Taking notes 📝 isn’t just something teachers ask you to do—it’s actually a super important skill that helps you learn, remember, and succeed in school 🎓💪.
A lot of students write notes… but then never look at them again 👀❌. That’s like doing all the work for nothing! The good news? There’s a simple way to fix that 🙌
It’s called the 5 Phases of Focused Note-Taking—and it helps you turn your notes into real learning 🧠💡
🪜 Phase 1: Capture (Step #1)
Goal: Write down important ideas while learning ✍️
When your teacher is talking 👩🏫, or you’re reading 📖 or watching a video 🎬, your job is to capture the important stuff.
What YOU should do 👇:
✍️ Write main ideas, not every single word
➡️ Use shortcuts (abbreviations, symbols, arrows)
👂 Listen for clues like “this is important” or repeated ideas 🚩
🖍️ Add quick drawings or symbols to help you remember
👉 Don’t worry if your notes aren’t perfect! Just get the ideas down.
Goal: Go back and make your notes better 🧠
Here’s the truth 😬:
After 20 minutes ⏱️ → you forget a LOT
After 1 day 📅 → you remember even less
💥 But you can fix that by working with your notes!
Try this ✨:
📦 Break notes into chunks
✏️ Add comments, questions, or symbols
⭐ Highlight important parts
➕ Add missing info
👉 Even though this part isn’t always fun… it REALLY helps you remember!
Goal: Think deeper about your notes 🤯
Now it’s time to go beyond just writing—start thinking!
Ask yourself questions ❓:
🤔 What don’t I understand yet?
🔮 What would happen if…?
🧪 How can I use this?
⚠️ What seems confusing?
Or think about this 💡:
🔗 What does this connect to?
📚 Where have I seen this before?
❤️ What do I think about this?
🧩 Can I add my own example?
Goal: Pull out the most important ideas and think about learning 💭
What YOU should do 👇:
✍️ Write a summary of the main ideas in your own words
⭐ Highlight the biggest takeaways
🤔 Reflect: What makes sense? What’s confusing?
🧩 Add personal examples or thoughts
Why it matters:
Reflecting helps your brain understand and remember the info better 🧠🔥
Goal: Use your notes to complete work, solve problems, or learn more 🌎
What YOU should do 👇:
📝 Apply your notes to classwork, homework, projects, or test prep
🌎 Make real-world connections
👩🎓👨🎓 Use your notes to teach yourself or others
Why it matters:
Using your notes makes learning stick longer and helps you see how knowledge connects to real life 💪📚
If you only take notes and never use them, they won’t help you much 😕
But if you:
✔️ Capture ideas
✔️ Process them
✔️ Connect your thinking
✔️ Summarize & Reflect
✔️ Apply what you learned
…you’ll understand more AND remember more 📈🔥
✨ Final Thought:
Taking notes is like training your brain 🧠💪. It might feel tricky at first 😅, but the more you practice, the better you’ll get. And soon—you’ll be a note-taking pro! 📝🏆
