The moment Jason Woodle first saw his newborn son in the delivery room, his immediate gut reaction was to count the boy’s fingers and toes. The quick scan revealed something unusual.
“I looked at the attending pediatrician and I said, I think we have some missing digits here,” Woodle, who lives in Charlottesville, Virginia, told TODAY. “It was quite a surprise for everyone in the room… it was actually quite unnerving.”
“My first thoughts were: How is he going to be able to function in the world? Everything from five-fingered gloves to being able to reel in a fishing rod to being able to play a video game,” he said. “Even something as simple as hitting a space bar on a keyboard – we take our thumbs for granted.”
Indeed, the opposable thumb is a marvel of anatomical design, allowing us to grasp and hold things, and giving us the ability to pinch and grip. Try opening a bottle or tying your shoes without it and you quickly realize its worth.
As he grew, Connor learned to pick up objects between his index and middle finger, crab-like, Woodle said.Connor was 1 when the first surgery took place last year — the optimum age for digit pollicizaÂtion because that’s when children are learning fine motor skills and have an incredible ability to adapt, Chhabra said.
Woodle still remembers the moment he first saw his son’s brand new thumb.
“I was in tears. It was a big, big thing for me to be able to see that,” Woodle said. “For him, too. For his first hand, when we took the cast off he held his hand up and he kind of stared at his hand
What makes us humans so special is that we have opposable thumbs. Without them, we wouldn't be able to do half the things we can – open things, turn handles, hold bits and bobs. It's one of the key things that separates us from animals, which can't really get a grip to the same level that we can.
Humans can move their thumb farther across their hand than any other primate. Having opposable thumbs helps in grasping things more easily, picking up small objects, and eating with one hand. An opposable thumb is a physical adaptation. An adaptation is a feature that helps a plant or animal survive in its habitat.
It was very hard for me to push something, trigger objects were hard to use.
Even holding a glass was so difficult without thumb as i was loosing grip.
Things were slipping from fingers
I was unable to write properly
For cutting my nails i had to fit nail cuter between my fingers
Even thumb can make a big change
: loose or no grip
: because of less capability to apply pressure in a particular direction
: thing we are holding is moving constantly
: object is not fixed to hand
:Yes
:Glove or band .
:Band as it will prevent sweat and also less size issue plus we can change direction easily.
no issues how many fingers a person is having, they can use this product
So i came across many products and found these two most helpful one of them costs approx 15000 Indian rupees and other one is approx 2000 Indian rupees but not available in India easily , in addition it is only for spoon and grip can become loose due to the cloth strip on smooth plastic spoon. So i just thought to further work on these and add few more elements in these to make them better.i will also try to reduce cost ( under 500 )

Actually the size can be changed accordingly and anyone who is mindful enough to do basic activities can use it . I guess starting from a 5 year old can use it.
A band with a holder which can hold stick like daily use objects as per preference and give a grip while holding and sticking products.
They are light and can be easily hold , i can make prototype easily .
I mean spoon , brush , pencil , paint brush , etc .
1st I'm going to start with prototype as it will give me a ease while sketching.
*half cut glove
*a sketch pen cap ( now i thought from where to arrange holder so i found old sketch pens and i started using there caps as holder)
* plastic spoon
*brush
1st i attached the cap of sketch pen with the half glove
then i cut the spoon and burn it to attach it with the back part of sketch pen.
so when i close the sketch pen the holder holds the spoon with hand .
same i did with the brush , cut the front part of brush and joint it with the bank part of sketch by burning it. and i also tried to put back side of pen inside the cap and use the
Pen front for writing .
Spoon and brush are success as i used them , i further need to test on people who can guide me what further changes i need to make to my product.
