I go to the DATA program at Ed White Middle School. Here's a bit about the program explaining what the program is, and about the school it's at!
DATA is a program for gifted students. It stands for Design and Technology Academy. We have two special classes at Data- Tech Apps and Tech Media. This project was made in our Tech Media class, with our teacher Mr. Hicks! He guided us through all our projects.
Our school mascot is a bald eagle.
Ed White Middle School was formed in 1970, three years after the astronaut Edward Higgins White II unfortunately passed away in 1967. White was born 1930 in San Antonio, Texas. Before his career in aeronautics, he was a second lieutenant of the Air Force. He was chosen as the second group of astronauts to take part in the missions of the Gemini and the Apollo spacecrafts. At the time of his death, he had two children and a wife named Patricia Eileen Finegan. He won several awards, including the Congressional Space Medal of Honor, the NASA Exceptional Service Award, and the Air Force commendation Medal. White and fellow astronauts, Gus Grissom, and Roger B. Chaffee all passed away in 1967 in a fire in the aircraft. Ed White Middle School is named in honor of him!
Our principal, Mr. Ruiz (and all the staff!)
Our vice principal, Mrs. Vallente!
Where is Ed White?
Ed White's location in San Antonio, Texas. The DATA program exists at a few other middle schools besides Ed White.
There are some specific things you need to be accepted into the program, however.
Show up to school with good attendance and
Maintain the NEISD School Code of Conduct
Be respectful towards teachers, staff, and students
Pass all the STAAR tests prior
Unlike other schools, we have two classes that regular schools don't have- Tech Media and Tech Apps, taught by Mr. Hicks and Mr. Garcia. These classes are exclusive to the DATA program! Tech Media is the class that I made this entire portfolio in, and all the projects in it. You learn all the programs and how they work, stuff that we are really lucky to do. In Tech Apps, you learn all the definitions of malware concepts or any parts of the computer. Your teacher for Tech apps, Mr. Garcia, is very fun and he will probably end up being your favorite teacher!
All the 6th grade teachers at DATA are very nice people, and you'll be lucky to have them teaching you for your first year at DATA. Don't be afraid to ask any of them for help throughout the year.
Mrs. Starr-Burt
Mrs. Starr-Burt will be your 6th grade math teacher. She loves star wars, which will be obvious by her classroom in portable 2. She is strict but at the same time very easygoing and funny! Her projects are fun and not too hard to do, and she will have no problem helping you out if you're struggling with something. She has the most work days, which are obviously days where there is no lesson and give you a chance to catch up on anything unfinished.
Mrs. Stubbins
Mrs. Stubbins is your 6th grade world cultures teacher. I think I learned the most in her class than in any other class, because she assigns a lot of things and spends a lot of time explaining to us what words mean! The subjects you'll learn in her class are also very interesting, like people's cultures, religions, locations, and their believes. My favorite project we did in her class was the create a world, where you can make a whole planet on your own and make everything customized how you like.
Mr. Kelly
Mr. Kelly teaches 6th grade science. He is one of the best teachers out there, since he is really funny and makes jokes with the kids because he doesn't have an old person's sense of humor (he can relate to the kids the most.) He is great at teaching and he makes sure to posts Gimkits and Blookets every now and then to help you remember things but with video games. His projects are also really fun, and more hands on. We did a bottle rocket project this year, and I still think of how fun it was. Mr. Kelly also will remind you if you have anything missing so your grade doesn't go down. He really cares about his students and it's very evident!
Mr. Wayment
Mr. Wayment teaches 6th grade ELAR. He is also a really great teacher, and he makes sure to incorporate art into some of his assignments! Additionally, he plays guitar and sings. You'll read two books (Hatchet, by Gary Paulsen and Minecraft: The Island, by Max Brooks.) and one play in his class. He does have homework in his class, but it is on Brainpop and usually pretty fun.
Mr. Hicks
Mr. Hicks is the reason that this portfolio was created, and this is one of the many awesome projects we do in his class! Everything on this portfolio was something we worked on in his class. He is the Multi-Media teacher at DATA, one of the tech teachers. We used a lot of the coolest programs in his class, and he is very good at explaining things that can be pretty complicating, like codes. I would say his class has the most independent projects, because Mr. Hicks explains the objective in the meeting and then we use his instructions to work through the class period. Every month or so, he posts a google classroom assignment for us to turn in our project and get a grade.
Mr. Garcia
Mr. Garcia was my favorite teacher from my 6th grade year because he was so nice to our class and fun. He is also a tech teacher, and his class is Tech Apps. He has the coolest assignments, like building things in Minecraft and Canva projects. He also has the most fun class, because he likes to chat with the students and is really funny, while also being punctual for grades and getting things in on time. When we're in his class, on rare occasions he will show us some really cool videos he and his former high school students made (like the lightsabers one!)
We have a few extra clubs here at DATA special to us because of what our school prioritizes- tech. They are special to our school. We also have the typical Middle School Clubs.
