What to Keep in Mind

Here are 10 things you should keep in mind as an educator working with students who have a disability.

1.  EVERY student is different, no child is cookie cutter.

2. Don't just teach academics, teach them compassion, kindness, respect, understanding, and other social skills.

3. Promote inclusion of everyone.

4. Keep good classroom management, overwhelming classrooms will be 100x more overwhelming for a student who has a disability.

5. Reduce sensory overload, loud noises, bright lights, and distracting students.

6. Be ADAPTABLE. 

7. Break tasks down into smaller parts.

8. Create a safe space in your classroom.

9. Use proper language, using slang can be confusing.

10. Encourage students to try their best.
