Family & Consumer sciences (or more commonly known as FCS) is a subject-based around cooking and sewing skills and includes topics such as math, science, nutrition, sustainability, and economics! At Cooper high school we have a few of these classes. The FCS classes taught at Cooper are FACS Essentials, Money Skills, Fashion & Interior Design 1-3, Food & Nutrition, Culinary 1 and 2. These classes are taught by Mrs. Steffen and Mrs. Knight who are also the FCCLA advisors at Cooper.
Being enrolled in an FCS class provides the opportunity to explore and prepare for careers, engage in entrepreneurial activities and work-based learning, earn industry certifications that show mastery of technical skills, and demonstrate the ability to effectively collaborate, communicate, think critically and creatively problem-solve real-world issues. FCS gives opportunities to learn great new skills and gives access to FCCLA, which will help you become a better person and help you to help your community. FCS is very important to help our communities develop strong leaders with practical skills.
The National Coalition for Family and Consumer Sciences Education is a coalition of different organizations that strive to better FCS education. They consist of AAFCS, ACTE/FCS, FCSEA, and FCCLA.
American Association of Family & Consumer Sciences is the association that promotes FCS and helps teachers by providing lesson plans and helps regulate FCS. (Also known as AAFCS)
The Association for Career and Technical Education Family and Consumer Sciences Division is a division of the Association for Career & Technical Education which is an association that focuses on providing educational leadership in developing a competitive workforce. They strive to make FCS education easier and better for all.
Finally, FCSEA, or Family and Consumer Sciences Education Association serve to improve the quality of instruction in the nation's classrooms and provide professional development opportunities for its members.
