Sinister Emojis
Lots of people around the UK have been watching the new Netflix release, Adolescence, and it has raised concerns regarding social media, emojis and the content that could be being accessed online by our young people. Lots of our children have mobile devices and access to the internet, so if you, like many parents especially after watching the recent release, have worries or concerns about the content, what it means, and how to keep your children safe online, I've attached some potentially helpful resources.
Don't forget, most schools will have pastoral teams and specialist safeguarding teachers, as well as your local neighbourhood officers, who will be more than happy to help you if you have specific concerns or worries relating to your child's online social presence. If you can, having open and frank discussions with your children about who they speak to, what they talk about, who can see their location and the websites or apps they access can go a long way in making sure they keep safe, and a reminder to parents/carers that most social media sites (including Snapchat and TikTok) have a minimum age of 13 before they can use the sites.
As always the Strood Academy Safeguarding team are here to help. Please get in touch with us by using the below contact details:
Designated Safeguard Lead = Ms Lindsay
Deputy Safeguard Lead = Ms Barlow
College Safeguarding Officers and Contacts:
Victory = Mrs Brice/Ms Hurley-Sherwood victory@stroodacademy.org
Hercules = Mrs Brice hercules@stroodacademy.org
Trafalgar = Ms Hurley-Sherwood trafalgar@stroodacademy.org
Please note, Strood Academy has a Safeguarding email which is operating both during and outside of school hours- safeguarding@stroodacademy.org. Please reach out to us if there is anything we can do to support.
Search Engines
Search engines are a routine part of everyday life, giving instant access to billions of web pages; however, this also increases the risk of children encountering harmful, untrustworthy, or illegal content.
This guide offers parents and educators quickfire information about the risks of search engines and practical steps that can be taken to safeguard children online.
ZEPETO
ZEPETO is a hugely popular social app with millions of active players worldwide, offering an engaging digital experience – but not without its concerns, especially for younger users.
This guide offers an overview of the associated risks of ZEPETO and what you can do to keep young people safe when having fun online.
