This module, our Safeguarding focus is on the LGBTQ+ community, and raising awareness of figures within this community. While the visibility of LGBTQ+ figures is increasing with the modern day and age, it is important to note that we still have a way to go. Educating ourselves on the identities of these public figures and famous faces within the LGBTQ+ community is just as significant as their successes and achievements.
As always the Strood Academy Safeguarding team are here to help. Please get in touch with us by using the below contact details:
Designated Safeguard Lead = Ms Lindsay
Deputy Safeguard Lead = Ms Barlow
College Safeguarding Officers and Contacts:
Victory = Mrs Hurley-Sherwood victory@stroodacademy.org
Hercules = Mrs Brice hercules@stroodacademy.org
Trafalgar = Mrs Phillips trafalgar@stroodacademy.org
Please note, Strood Academy has a Safeguarding email which is operating both during and outside of school hours- safeguarding@stroodacademy.org. Please reach out to us if there is anything we can do to support.
This week's college assemblies have been on the theme of World Book Day. It is no secret that as students progress into adulthood, reading for pleasure becomes less frequent. This assembly took the opportunity to focus on how we can make reading for pleasure a more enjoyable habit, use the technology at our disposal to assist with this and provided our students with some words of wisdom from their teachers on the importance of reading for pleasure. A huge thank you to our college teams and Mrs Hoare for running these assemblies, and most importantly to our students for their respect and engagement throughout.
As part of our World Book Day celebrations, this week students have been playing 'Guess the Hand', wherein they were shown pictures of their teachers holding a book with a clue to their identity in the background, and had to work together to figure out who it could be. Can you figure out any of thes ones below?
Continuing with our World Book Day celebrations, we had the pleasure of welcoming Callum York, published author, to our academy. Students with the highest engagement scores on Sparx Reader were invited to attend as a reward for their excellent efforts in reading. Callum gave an inspirational talk all about his journey to becoming an author, and was then interviewed by our students, who really put him through his paces with numerous excellent questions! Callum writes young adult fantasy and science fiction and shared insights about his book, “Oberon- The King”, with the students.
A reminder that students have until 15th March to complete their options choices. They can do this by completing the Google Form sent to all parents and carers. You can visit our website for further details on all options courses here: https://stroodacademy.org.uk/curriculum/year-9-options/

The module 4 mock series has been extremely successful and we are very proud of our year 11 students and their conduct and behaviour in the main hall. We look forward to informing students of their results during the ‘Year 11 and Year 13 Mock results afternoon’ on Wednesday 20th March. We also welcome you to attend this event from 2.15pm to 3.30pm on this date to be with your child when they open their mock results envelope as well as a number of other talks led by Mr Fatania surrounding the year 11 strategy, and an introduction to 6th form. We look forward to sharing their success with you at this event
To reward year 11 students for their exceptional conduct we are introducing an ‘8 Day Privilege’ card. The 8 days run from Wednesday 6th March to Friday 15th March and to achieve their ‘privilege’ they must attend school each day. On these dates this card needs to be signed by form tutors/intervention staff every morning to confirm their attendance on that date.
If students are present during those 8 days they are going to be given the following privileges.
Year 11 exclusive entrance and exit via the main door at reception each day.
Year 11 exclusive queue jump at the restaurant at lunch and break time.
Exclusive year 11 lunch time space.
Attendance on all 8 days means they will be given a treat at the end of the day on Friday 15th March.
Their privilege card gives students the right to receive all of these privileges. They must look after their card and make sure not to lose it otherwise they are at risk of losing their privileges. On the 8th day they will hand over their card with 8 form tutor signatures to gain a treat!
The module 4 mock series has been extremely successful and we are very proud of our year 13 students and their conduct in their mock exams. We look forward to informing students of their results during the ‘ Year 13 Mock results afternoon’ on Wednesday 20th March, an event that you are encouraged to attend. We look forward to sharing their success with you at this event.
Your child’s attendance every day is crucial to their success in their final exams. The Department for Education suggests that if attendance falls below 96%, attainment is negatively affected. Even for high-achieving students poor attendance has a significant negative impact on their grades. It has been shown that missing just 17 days of school in Year 13 reduces final A level grades by one grade across all subjects. This could easily be sufficient to prevent a student from getting an apprenticeship and into the university or career of their choice.
The average Strood Academy year 13 attendance is 93.7%. During the module 4 mock series this increased to 94.7% and we would like to continue this high level of attendance post mock exams. You can access your child’s up to date attendance figure on MCAS. Please discuss with your child their current attendance figure and how you can work together that this figure is as high as physically possible.
We thank you for your support in ensuring that your child’s attendance is as important to you as it is to us.
Attached is the KS5 dress code for your information, as well as Expectations which have been shared with year 12 and 13 students
Early Finish Fridays: any 6th form students who achieve 100% attendance for the week have the opportunity of leaving during lunchtimes on Friday. Ms Stubbs will be liaising with eligible students. Please refer to the letter shared this week for further information on this.
Years 12 and 13 have subject-specific study periods built into their timetables, roomed into the study area. This area is now being supervised as a quiet study area to enable students to continue with their set subject work. We hope students find this useful.
