Our new home from home

Hello everyone

This is a place where I can post some extra items to help us with our home schooling.

Mr. Harrington (January 2021)

It would be great if we could do these 4 things every school day:

School Open March 15th

We are back in class on Monday, March 15th. It will be great to see everyone again.

World Book Day 2021

This year, World Book Day, are providing a digital version of their book token. The expiry date is being extended to beyond March 28th by participating retailers due to the lockdown. Waterstones are not participating this year due to store closures but other bookstores might when they re-open so hold onto your voucher for that just in case moment.

The digital token is below.

It is Fairtrade Fortnight and we are going to be learning all about what Fairtrade is, how it benefits farmers and how we can choose what world we want to live in.

We kicked off Fairtrade Fortnight yesterday (Monday, 22nd Feb), by watching two videos on what Fairtrade is and we also did a quiz on chocolate to see how much we really knew about chocolate. The quiz and videos are below for anyone who missed them.

Schools Choco Workshop

There is a Workshop taking place on Wednesday (23rd February) from 2.00 to 3.00 pm as part of the Fairtrade Fortnight campaign. The workshop will run through the history of chocolate as well as how chocolate is made form bean to bar. You could ask your mom/dad to join this Zoom call with these details if you want to check it out with your mom/dad:

Meeting ID: 959 9255 6854

Slide 6 & Slide 7

Have a look at the Chocolate Bar - Bean to Bar PDF below and also on the Class Story on Class Dojo.

The 8 stages to make the bar are : People, Trees, Pods, Beans, Trade, Factory, Shop and You. For Slide 6 cover the first 4 stages and for Slide 7 cover the last 4 stages. You can do this over today and tomorrow. Write a sentence or two about each step and put in some photos/images.

Slide 8 & Slide 9

When you buy a product with the Fairtrade logo, you are buying a quality product and ensuring that farmers and workers are supported to improve their communities. Fairtrade means giving small scale farmers a fair price for their product as well as providing safe working conditions and a secure future. Big multinational companies and supermarkets will still get most of the profit from the sale of the goods but Fairtrade means farmers have a stable income and ensures trade, not aid which means farmers can plan for a secure future. In your G Slides project can you do two more Slides today.

Slide 8: Products in your house that are Fairtrade (maybe banana, chocolate, tea, sugar, coffee). Look for the Fairtrade logo. Take a picture and insert into G Slides. If you are not able to find any Fairtrade products at home then Google some and insert images).

Slide 9: What can you do to help farmers in other parts of the world? (In Tesco a Non-Fairtrade bunch of bananas is €1.19 while a Fairtrade bunch of organic bananas is €1.33. Not much of a difference in price but it makes a big difference to a farmer’s life in other parts of the world).

Friday Activity: 05.02.2021

Design a shopping bag using the theme of "reduce, reuse, recycle"

Watch Múinteoir John as he teaches a lesson all about the environment. In the video below go to 21 minutes and 40 seconds in when Múínteoir John will pop up on screen (Season 1, Episode 07, Thursday 14th January 2021).

After watching the lesson, have a think of how you can make the environment a better place, what can you do.

We are going to enter the Lidl Design a Bag competition. More info on the competition here. Competition details here.

Have a go at drawing your own design based on the theme of "reduce, reuse, recycle" for a shopping bag. The design/drawing should be in landscape mode.

We all need to do so much better at taking care of our environment. The supermarket Lidl, is trying really hard to help do its part to better the environment all around us. Lidl has launched a competition where it is giving children the opportunity to design a print for a new reusable shopping bag made from recycled materials that it wants to make for its shops. Entrants are encouraged to interpret the R’s of Sustainability in their own way and Lidl encourages children to take inspiration from all around them; whether you create a drawing based on reusing egg containers as seed pots or regrow your garden into a haven for bees and butterflies, the creative possibilities are endless! You can find out more about the competition here: https://www.lidl.ie/shopping-bags

If you do not have the entry form that includes space for the drawing then that is fine. You can just use a blank page with no lines in your green copy or another piece of blank paper.

When you are done, if you want to upload your picture and take part in the competition you can do that here: https://www.lidl.ie/shopping-bags/competition

If you are not taking part in the competition that is fine but we are still drawing a design for a shopping bag. Remember, Let your creative streak run wild and come up with a bright and colourful design that will stand out from the crowd.

Friday Geography activity: 29/01/2021

Mapping challenge - Let's make a map!

We are going to a "5KM From Home Map" as this is currently how far we are allowed to travel or exercise from our home. We are not allowed to go any further than 5KM from our house even for the moment but this is a great opportuity to study in more detail what is all around us within 5 Kilometers from where we live. Using this website: https://2kmfromhome.com/5km will allow you to view 5km in any direction from your home. You just need to either allow the website location access or just type in your address into the search box on the website.

Once you do that, have an old nosy and see what is in your 5km area (football fields, parks, rivers, forests, farms, churches, shops, major roads). Try to answer these questions: What interesting or fun or cool places are near your home? What places are most important? What landmarks are near you house (house/apartment etc)? What sporting/recreational are near you house? You will represent all these features using your key for your map.

What is a map key? A map key or legend is included with a map to unlock it. It gives you the information needed for the map to make sense. Maps often use symbols or colours to represent things, and the map key explains what they mean. More info on maps and signs and symbols here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PMVk7tiNuiY

You will need to find a blank piece of paper. Maybe there is something like an old bill/back of a letter/inside of cereal box etc lying around with a black back. If not, use your copy. To get a perfect circle for your map, use something like a bowl. Just make sure it takes up nearly (you need to leave room for the Key) the whole of whatever page you are using.

Have a look at the pictures below, some are 2KM (just ignore the fact they are for 2km as we are doing 5km) some are 5KM from home. Look at the "Key" PDF. You can't put everything that is in your 5km limit so just put some of the main features. Pick the ones that are important to you.
