Past papers are a very useful way to test the knowledge of your topic and, equally as importantly, allow you to practice applying what you have learned in an exam setting.
There are a variety of ways to use past papers.
One is using past papers to simulate an exam setting. Set a timer in a quiet space and put the notes away, this is best for getting the real deal. We'd highly recommend doing at least a couple exam-condition past papers before any exam.
Note that you should be somewhat familiar with your content before you try this.
Past papers allow you to gain insight into what questions you can be asked. Through this you are able to prepare to ensure you address and answer the questions better in the exam. Furthermore, they are extra practice which can increase your understanding and skill with a topic.
MARKING your practice paper is nearly as important as doing it! Compare your answers to the answers in the marking schedule and use a red pen to mark in feedback. Ask your teachers or tutors to explain anything you're still unsure of, because a similar thing is very likely to come up again.
Past papers for NZQA can be accessed from https://www.nzqa.govt.nz/ or https://studytime.co.nz/exams/. Both websites have marking schedules to compare your answers.
With NZQA, some question types are really common. If you can recognise this, and make a answer template or keep in mind key words, then the exam will be a lot easier.
If you are preparing for Cambridge exams, visit IGCSE Past Papers & Questions by Topic | Save My Exams, to view past papers.
If you are preparing for year 9 and 10 exams, ask your teacher if you can have any past papers or and practice questions to prepare with. They will be more than happy to give you some on top of any you have already been given. It is good practice to take on study habits early before you head into NCEA or Cambridge exams - junior exams form a foundation for the future, so don’t overlook this!
