SPC Campus Enhancement Project Kick-off Ceremony

The official kick-off ceremony for the Campus Enhancement Project of St. Paul's College, under the leadership of noted alumnus Dr. Ian Chan, was held at the Bishop's House in Central on 4th December.

All of the stars in SPC galaxy attended, and there was a large media contingent to document this momentous occasion, as the College moves forward in its major renovation project.

Stellar alumni in attendance included Dr. Joseph Yam Chi-kwong, former Chief Executive of Hong Kong Monetary Authority and Member of Executive Council, Mr. Sunny Lo Hoi-kwong, Chairman of Cafe de Coral, Mr. Cheung Man-sun, former Deputy Director of Broadcasting of RTHK and Mr. Lawrence Cheng Tan Shui, a famous cross-media performer and presenter.

Mr. Dennis Yuen, Principal of St. Paul’s College, opened the ceremony with an address that stressed the dire necessity of enhancing the existing campus on Bonham Road.

“The space is no longer enough to meet the needs of modern learning, and therefore I believe that there is a pressing need to expand and enhance the campus. We will be able to provide students with more room for development,” explained Mr. Yuen.

“Under the slogan ‘Let’s build our common future’, we hope to engage all people to create a better future for our students and cultivate greater talent within our society.”

After the Principal’s address, the College officially announced the establishment of the fundraising committee for the campus enhancement project.

Upon appointment as Chairman of the fundraising committee, Dr. Ian Chan Yau Nam, SBS, MH, said, “The campus enhancement project plays a pivotal role in the future development of the College. As an alumnus of St. Paul's College, I am proud and honored to have the opportunity to serve the College and participate in such a historical undertaking.”

As with all St. Paul's events, the spirit of brotherhood and common purpose prevailed with a strong turnout of both alumni and students at the ceremony.

The College would especially like to thank all of the old boy stalwarts who have given so much of their heart, soul and spirit to the school as we embark on this ambitious project.

5/F classroom overview as on 1 November 2018

The classrooms enhancement have been completed with new features below:

- Classrooms enlarged by 24% of usable space

- Installation of blackboards and movable whiteboards for flexible usage

- Completion of external flooring finishes

5/F classroom overview as on 10 September 2018

The classrooms have been 95% completed. They will be ready for use after the defective whiteboards are replaced and the external flooring finishes are completed. The new features include:

- VRV air conditioning system: precisely regulating the temperature within the classrooms while minimizing energy consumption

- Lighting: with energy-efficient daylight sensor

- Windows: using double-glazed and low emissivity glass to reduce heat loss

- Flooring materials: using the eco-friendly Gerflor Taralay Impression flooring which is antibacterial, free from heavy metals and reduces noise impact

The progress of the Campus Enhancement Project has been slightly fallen behind schedule due to the unstable weather conditions in summertime. The exterior of classrooms is being completed while the weather permits.

The metal balustrade painting works and floor waterproofing works to the new steel balcony are being done.

As for the interiors, the boys’ toilet on the 5/F are ready for use. The lockers and cabinets in the classrooms have been installed.

20 August 2018

The scaffolding facing school playground has been dismantled. The scaffolding facing Pokfulam Road will remain in place until August 2019.

The platform screeding of 2/F to 4/F has been completed. Installation of the drainage grating will take place soon.

5/F Classrooms: solid doors’ installation has been completed. Glass doors have also been installed.

5/F steel platform: lighting is being installed. Painting works are to be done shortly.

The metal balustrades of the Academic Building are being installed.

Durasteel is being installed in the new corridors of the Academic Building to further ensure campus safety. It is a 4-hour fire and blast resistant composite panel of fibre reinforced cement mechanically bonded to punched steel sheets on both outer surfaces.

Windows are being installed in F. 5A-5D and 5F classrooms.

10 July 2018

On the 6th and 9th of July, the mock-up 5F classroom was opened for staff members and students respectively. They expressed their opinions about the design of the future classrooms and suggested how it could further facilitate learning and teaching.

Overview of the mock-up classroom:

There are both blackboards and movable whiteboards for flexible usage.

There is a display board as well as a storage cupboard at the back of the classroom.

Scaffolding and hoarding on the G/F facing the playground have been modified for the installation of steel decks, which will become the new corridors of the Classroom Block.

Patition walls of the classrooms on the 5/F are erected, with temporary openings for access.

The original corridor on the 5/F has now become part of the new classroom.

Mock-Up Classroom: the picture below shows the wall next to the corridor. There will be two doors, with openings in between for future viewing panel.

In order to ensure a safety and secure construction environment, site inspections are being carried out by the Special Project Committee members.

The walls of the classrooms facing the corridor on the 5/F are being erected. Approximately 70% of the establishment of the new walls between the classrooms has now been completed.

Construction of the new corridor of the 5/F is on progress.

9 May 2018

Partition walls between classrooms on the 5/F were demolished and will be replaced by light-weight gypsum block walls. The shaded area was the original corridor and will become part of the new classrooms.

Parapet walls on the 3/F were demolished. The areas covered by wooden boards will be the future corridor.

The corridors on 1/F-2/F remain clean and tidy during the construction period. Additional lighting is installed to compensate for the lack of natural sunlight. Extra fans have been added to enhance ventilation. Soundproof screen(on the right) has been installed to reduce noise impact of the works.

Bamboo scaffolding with a dust screen has been set up. All the noisy works are carried out after school and on school holidays. For safety reasons, the lower playground will be closed when the works are in progress.

Bamboo scaffolding with a dust screen has been set up.

The setting up of bamboo scaffolding with dust screen and hoarding board, including a screen, has been completed. A water barrier has also been installed.
