Taonga Pūoro
(Māori Musical Instruments)
The Families of Taonga Pūoro
Taonga pūoro are generally categorized by the specific elements or gods associated with their origins:
Wind Instruments (Tāwhirimātea, God of Winds): These include the kōauau (a small flute made of bone or wood), nguru (a flute often played through the nose), and the striking cocoon-shaped pūtōrino, which is said to possess both male and female voices.
Trumpets (Tangaroa, God of the Sea, & Tānemāhuta, God of Forests): The pūkāea is a long wooden trumpet historically used for announcing arrivals and during warfare. The pūtātara is a unique signaling horn made from a triton shell connected to a carved wooden mouthpiece.

Gourds (Hinepūtehue, Goddess of Gourd Instruments): Hollowed gourds, known as hue, can act as percussive shakers, bird callers, or deep, booming bass instruments when blown over.
Vibrational and Rhythmic Instruments: The pūrerehua and porotiti are winged discs attached to strings that create a mesmerizing, eerie whirring sound when swung in the air, often used for healing or rituals.
