WALT:
Explore art making conventions to create a self portrait in the minimalist style of Julian Opie.
WE HAVE ACHIEVED OUR LEARNING WHEN:
We have drawn and painted our self portraits in a minimalist style by:
Removing most of our faces detail, focusing on core features,
Utilising as few lines as possible to recreate our face,
Limiting the use of colour and texture to enhance the minimalist style.
LEARN
We are going to create self portraits in the style of Julian Opie. Julian is a British visual artist, born in London in 1958. He is known for being a minimalist.
Minimal Characteristics to consider:
Strip back the models face till only the core features remain.
Display the features in a very simple way.
By sticking to these simple artistic laws the artist Julian feels he can bring out the persons nature.
Julian uses digital technology for this process , he photographs his subjects, scans and manipulates the images.
we will also do this, after we experiment use a manual process to create similar portraits.
CREATE
EQUIPMENT:
Ohp sheet
Black and white photo of your face (High contrast)
Black marker pens
Arcylic paint (50:50 mix with PVA)
Coloured backing sheet
PROCESS:
Attach the ohp (acetate) to your photo. Draw in the obvious lines, consider the length of the pen movement and the width of the line. Consider the aspects Opie leaves out - lines for nose, eye detail etc.
Once your outline is complete, remove the photo backing, turning your sheet over so the marker lines are face down on your desk.
Paint with arcylic paint mix.
Choose a coloured A4 sheet as backing, and secure with double sided tape. Name your portrait - in the style of Opie, NAME, PROFESSION, YEAR (See Julian Opie self portrait labelling example).
