One Small Step Libraries brings StoryCorps' mission directly into your community space. This toolkit of 10+ programs (just in: teen programs too!) with facilitation guides aid libraries in fostering authentic human connection through facilitating fundamental interpersonal skill-building. The programming is designed to be adaptable, accessible, and ready to meet patrons where they are.
One Small Step activities are not inherently conflict mediation tools-- they are building blocks for meaningful human connection. When we are in conflict, we are often in the process of drawing divisions. But before we draw divisions, we have to find what’s shared. Any of these programs can be utilized as bite size pieces-- appetizer style activities to sow the seeds for finding that shared ground.
Whether you're implementing a single program or the entire suite, these resources will help you create spaces that fit your community and make it easier for people talk to and understand their neighbors.

Libraries have always been more than a place for books—they're community cornerstones where different perspectives meet, context is welcomed, and meaningful connections form. One Small Step programs for libraries builds on this foundation, providing structured ways to foster understanding and connection.
Whether you're a small rural library or a large urban system, these resources are designed to help you create spaces for genuine connection and understanding in your community. Each program can be scaled and adapted to your community's needs while maintaining the core elements that make OSS effective.
We're here to support you in this important work. As you explore these resources, remember that every conversation, every moment to listen- to practice coming together- contributes to stronger communities.
With gratitude,
Claire, Sophia, Emily, and Virginia.
