John Francis Gallagher

Class of 1914

John Gallagher played on the first organized football, basketball, and baseball teams at Stonington High School. He was captain of the football team in 1911 and 1913 and captained the basketball team in 1913-1914. He was the starting catcher for the baseball team for four years and was team captain in 1911, 1913, and 1914.

After graduating from SHS, he served in the United States Navy during World War I. He later graduated from the University of Albany Law School. Gallagher coached baseball at Westerly High School for four seasons, and his 1923 team won the Eastern Connecticut-Western Rhode Island league championship. He went on to coach football and baseball at SHS in 1924 and 1925.

From 1930 to 1962, he was the Stonington Town Attorney. He was elected to be the town's Judge of Probate, and also served in that role for North Stonington. He was the United States Government Appeal Agent in the Selective Service System from 1941 to 1944, and was the longtime attorney for the Pawcatuck Fire District. He served as the president of the Friendly Sons of Saint Patrick in 1956, and was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the American Legion, and Disabled American Veterans.


Eugene O. Gynther

Class of 1933

Eugene Gynther participated in football, basketball, baseball, and track at Stonington High School, earning 10 letters, and was voted Most Athletic of the Class of 1933. He was captain of the football team and co-captain of the baseball team as a senior, and was elected captain of the basketball team, which was cut from the SHS athletic program that year but participated in the Southeastern Connecticut Junior Basketball League. He was also president of the S Club and Class President as a freshman and a member of the Student Council.

He played on various amateur and semi-professional basketball and baseball teams after graduating from SHS, and then served in the United States Navy. He was chosen as the outstanding student in his class at the Naval Training Station in Newport, and served from 1936-40, and then during World War II from 1942-45, serving on the battleship destroyer USS O'Bannon that was awarded 17 battle stars. He was named to the All-U.S. Navy Baseball Team twice.

He was a manager and coach for both the Westerly Little League and Pawcatuck Little League. A longtime machinist, he retired as a supervisor from Cottrell/Harris Corporation.


George J. Savin

Class of 1946

George Savin participated in football, basketball, baseball, and track at Stonington High School. He was a member of the 1945 Eastern Connecticut Conference champion football team. He earned All-ECC honors in track in 1946, and won the state championship in the 220-yard dash, finishing in 23.3 seconds. He was also a member of 440-yard and 880-yard relay teams that took first at the 1946 Connecticut Relays. During the 1946 baseball season, he caught a no-hitter thrown by Ernie Ozanne. He also served as Vice President of the Class of 1946.

After graduation from SHS, he served in the U.S. Army, and played football on the Heidelberg Sodbusters; he played for the semi-professional Stonington Red Devils upon his return to the area. He was a co-founder of the Stonington Athletic Boosters and later served as President, coached Stonington's first Pee Wee Football team, and coached the St. Mary Church basketball team. He served in the Stonington Police Department from 1957 to 1983, retiring at the rank of lieutenant. After his retirement he worked as a security officer at Electric Boat, and he was also a captain with the Stonington Neptune Engine Company.


Ernest H Ozanne, Jr.

Class of 1947

Ernest Ozanne participated in basketball and baseball at Stonington High School. As a member of the basketball team, he was named First Team All-Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference (CIAC) Tournament in 1946, when the Bears were Class B state finalists. He served as captain and earned All-Eastern Connecticut Conference honors in his senior year, when he led the ECC in scoring and helped the Bears to the CIAC tournament semi-finals. As a member of the baseball team, he earned three letters and as a sophomore pitched in every game the Bears played. As a junior, he pitched a no-hitter against Killingly, and in his senior season he earned All-ECC honors and played four different field positions as well as pitching as both a starter and a reliever.

He lettered in baseball at the University of Connecticut, and was a member of the Yankee Conference baseball championship teams of 1951 and 1952. After receiving his bachelor’s degree in Economics from UConn, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, and played on Army baseball teams in Korea and Japan. He retired from Electric Boat after a 30-year career.


Charles W. Shea

Class of 1947

Charles Shea participated in cross-country, football, basketball, and track at Stonington High School. He helped lead the Bears to the basketball Class B state finals in 1946 and the semi-finals in 1947. As a senior he led the Bears in scoring with 308 points for the season, and was the second-leading scorer in the Eastern Connecticut Conference. He scored a then-individual game scoring record with 33 points against Norwich Free Academy. He earned First Team All-Eastern Connecticut Conference and Second Team All-Class B Tournament honors.

He played for two seasons as a walk-on at Providence College, and graduated from PC in 1951. He served in the United States Army and was with the Army Security Agency in Ethiopia for two years.

He owned and operated Shea's Office Products in Pawcatuck, Mystic, and Wakefield, and continued his participation in athletics as the coach of the Monsanto youth basketball team for many years. In 2006, he and his wife received the Gold Medal of Honor from St. Edmund’s, Mystic, in recognition of their service to church and community.


Dick Williams

Class of 1960

Dick Williams participated in basketball, baseball, and track at Stonington High School. He earned All-Eastern Connecticut Conference honors in both basketball and baseball as a senior. He was a member of the 1958-59 ECC champion basketball team and ECC champion baseball teams in 1957, 1959, and 1960 as well as the Class B Baseball State Champions. He was the Valedictorian of the Class of 1960 and president of the National Honor Society, and received the Harvard Book Prize.

He played basketball at the United States Military Academy, West Point, graduated in 1964, and is a Vietnam veteran who earned two Bronze Stars, an Air Medal, and three Army Commendation Medals before retiring as a major. He also received a Master of Arts in History from Princeton University, where he worked in administration for over thirty years. He was the Faculty Athletic Representative from 1977-2008 and in 1999 received the Faculty Athletic Representative Award from the All-American Football Foundation. He received the Princeton Athletic Department Award in 2002, the Princeton University Alumni Service Award in 2007, was voted an honorary member of four graduating Princeton classes, and was the faculty advisor for several varsity teams.

An active member of his community, he coached Little League baseball for five years, was a Boy Scouts Cub Master for three years, and has been active in his church and various community boards and volunteer activities.


David Cidale

Class of 1965

David Cidale participated in football, basketball, and baseball at Stonington High School, playing on Eastern Connecticut Conference championship teams in football in 1964 and baseball in 1965. He earned All-ECC honors in football and baseball, and was awarded the Stonington Police Association Outstanding Player and Stonington School Bus Drivers Offensive Player awards at the 1964 Armistice Day game versus Westerly. He received the Latin Scholar Award as a freshman and the Bausch and Lomb Science Award as a junior.

He participated in football and track while earning an engineering degree at the University of Rochester, and was inducted a member of the University of Rochester Athletic Hall of Fame in 2014. He was a fighter pilot with the United States Air Force and continued his football career as a running back with his base team in Germany, earning league Most Valuable Player honors leading the team to an 11-0 record and the U.S. Air Force Football Championship of Europe. He also played for the National Rugby Club of Luxembourg for two years. He retired after 26 years of service at the rank of lieutenant colonel, and later flew with the New York Air National Guard and then became a commercial pilot. He is currently a volunteer pilot with the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary.


Jennifer C. Sullivan

Class of 2001

Jennifer Sullivan participated in soccer, basketball, track, and lacrosse at SHS. She earned All-Eastern Connecticut Conference honors in soccer as a sophomore, junior, and senior, and was All-State as a junior and senior. She was a member of the state champion 4x800 meter relay team as a junior. She was a member of the Connecticut Olympic Development Program from 1997-2001.

She was a four-year starter in soccer at the University of Connecticut on teams that won the Big East regular season title all four years and won the conference tournament in 2002 and 2004. The team qualified for the NCAA tournament all four years, and were NCAA finalists in 2003.

She was an assistant coach at Providence College for six seasons. She is a Guidance Counselor at Stonington High School and coaches the Ledyard High School girls soccer team.


William “Will” Agnello

Class of 2002

Will Agnello participated in cross-country, indoor track, and outdoor track at Stonington High School, earning 12 letters during his career and serving as captain in all three seasons as a senior. He earned All-Eastern Connecticut Conference honors six times, three times for cross-country, once for indoor track, and twice for outdoor track, and earned All-State honors for Outdoor Track in his junior year and Cross Country as a senior. He was the 1999 Freshman State Champion in the 5000 meter race, and was a member of the 1999 Class M Outdoor Track and 2001 Class M Cross-Country State Champion teams. He was named to the Footlocker Cross-Country All-Northeast Team in 2001, and also received the 2001 Connecticut State Police Commander’s Award for exemplary performance displaying motivation, dedication, and leadership.

He earned a bachelor's degree in Sports Management with a concentration in Applied Exercise Science from Eastern Connecticut State University, where he ran the 800m and 1000m for the outdoor track team. He is a personal trainer in Mystic and Niantic.


Jennifer Fogg

Class of 2003

Jennifer Fogg participated in soccer, basketball, and softball at Stonington High School, and captained soccer and basketball as a senior. As a junior and senior, she was named All-Eastern Connecticut Conference Medium Division Honorable Mention in soccer and First Team in basketball. She led the basketball team in scoring as a senior and finished her basketball career with 1,167 points, a school record at the time.

After graduation from SHS, she attended Suffolk University, where she was a four-year starter for the basketball team. She was the Women's Basketball Rookie of the Year in her freshman season and was team Most Valuable Player in her sophomore, junior, and senior seasons. She was awarded the Charles Law Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2007, when she graduated cum laude with a bachelor's degree in Public Relations. She also holds a master's degree in Education from the University of Miami, and is a project manager at Lockheed-Martin.
