Bill Maggs

Bill Maggs was an outstanding performer in cross-country and track at SHS. He was a member of Eastern Connecticut-Western Rhode Island champion teams in cross-country in 1924 and in track in 1926. As a junior and senior he was all-conference in cross-country, taking first place at the annual conference meet in both 1924 and 1925. As a member of the track team, he earned all-conference as a junior and as a senior, when he served as team captain. At the 1926 conference meet, he set records in both the 100-yard and 200-yard dash races, placing first in three events and second in one, earning 18 points overall as SHS won the meet. He was also a key performer for SHS at the Junior Olympics Meet held in New London in 1925, placing first in the 100-yard dash and second in the broad jump. SHS also participated in the annual Kingston, Rhode Island Interscholastic Meet that year, placing second, with Maggs winning both the 100-yard and 220-yard dash races. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the United States Army. A lifelong resident of the Town of Stonington, he was active in Boy Scouts for most of his life and served as Scoutmaster of Troop #6 for many years.

Bruce Greene

Bruce Greene was an outstanding performer in football, basketball, and track at SHS, earning eight varsity letters and All-Eastern Connecticut Conference honors five times. A three-time All-ECC performer in football, he was a member of the 1961 ECC championship team. As a member of the 1963 ECC champion track team, he won the broad jump at the ECC meet; at the 1964 conference meet he won the 440-yard dash. He received numerous academic honors while at SHS, including election to the National Honor Society, and was president of the S Club. At Trinity College in Hartford, he participated in football, indoor track, and outdoor track, earning six varsity letters.

Eddie Edgar

Eddie Edgar participated in football, basketball, and track at SHS. He was a member of basketball teams which were conference champions and state semi-finalists in both his junior and senior seasons. He was a triple-threat on offense in football and was also part of an outstanding defense. An all-conference performer in football in both his junior and senior seasons, and in those two seasons rushed for twenty touchdowns as well as passing for six. He was one of four SHS players named First-Team All-State in 1942, on a team which is considered by many to be the greatest in school history; the team did not give up a point to a conference opponent and ended the season ranked second in Connecticut. He received a football scholarship to the University of Georgia, and also later played at the University of Rhode Island and professionally for the Providence Steamrollers. He served in the United States Army during World War II. He later settled in New London and was active in youth baseball leagues there for many years.


Gina Gingerella D'Ambrosio

Gina Gingerella D’Ambrosio participated in gymnastics, softball, and track at SHS. She led SHS to three straight Eastern Connecticut Conference championships in gymnastics, including unbeaten seasons in 1983-84 and 1984-85. She earned All-ECC honors three times and was second place All-Around at the ECC meet as a junior and first place as a senior. She also earned All-State recognition three times and place fifth All-Around at the State Open meet in her senior season. As a senior, she was chosen to represent Connecticut at the First Annual National All-American Championships, held in Denver, Colorado. An outstanding student at SHS, she was elected to the National Honor Society and received an academic and athletic scholarship to attend the University of Connecticut. She received the Connecticut State Service Award for USA Gymnastics in 2001 and currently serves as the Vice-Chairman of Connecticut USA Gymnastics.

Harry Jones

Harry Jones was an outstanding performer in football and track at SHS. He was a key performer on the 1938 and 1939 conference champion football teams; the 1939 team was also named Connecticut Class B champion. He excelled in track and served as captain in his senior season. SHS won the Connecticut Class B track championship in 1937, 1938, and 1940, and placed second in 1939, when the team won the Rhode Island Class B championship. As a junior, he won the 100-yard and 200-yard dash races at the 1939 state meet and was a member of the winning half-mile relay team. At the 1940 state meet, he set a record in the 100-yard dash, won the 220-yard dash, and anchored the winning 880-yard relay team. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the United States Army. A lifelong resident of the Town of Stonington, he maintained an interest in sports, becoming an avid golfer.

James Ballato

James Ballato was an outstanding performer in football, basketball, baseball, and track at SHS. A football captain in his senior year, he was named all-conference twice, and he was also a member of the 1950 state champion basketball team. He excelled in baseball, named to the all-conference team for three years, batting a record .545 in 1950. He served as team captain for both his junior and senior seasons. He was also captain of the track team in his senior year. He won the 220-yard dash at the conference and state meets as a junior and senior, and in his senior year also won the 110-yard dash and javelin at the conference meet. He served as president of his class at SHS for three years and was also president of the S Club. He received an athletic scholarship to Arnold College and participated in baseball and track. He also served in the United States Army. He later played semi-professional baseball in Norwich, New London, and Westerly, and became active in local youth athletic leagues, receiving the Pawcatuck Little League Distinguished Service Award in 1984. He served as the Stonington Recreation Director for fifteen years.

Jim Crowley

Jim Crowley was an outstanding performer in cross-country and track at SHS, serving as captain for both teams in his senior year. He won a state-record 42 consecutive cross-country meets and was the Eastern Connecticut Conference champion in both his junior and senior seasons, and also earned all-ECC honors in both indoor and outdoor track for both years. He placed second in the two-mile race at the State Open indoor meet as a junior and a senior; he was fifth in the two-mile race at the State Open outdoor meet as a junior and fourth as a senior. At Central Connecticut State University, he ran cross-country and track for four years, serving as cross-country captain and earning all-conference honors in his senior year. A long-time teacher in the Stonington Public Schools, he has served as head coach of boys track and boys and girls cross-country and as an assistant coach for boys soccer, boys and girls track, girls tennis, and freshman football.


Paul deCastro

Paul deCastro participated in soccer, basketball, and baseball at SHS. He was a part of Eastern Connecticut Conference championship soccer teams in 1988, 1989, and 1991 and served as team captain as a junior and senior. He earned All-ECC honors as a sophomore, and although he suffered a season-ending injury during his junior year, in his senior year he scored twenty goals and was named All-ECC, ECC Player of the Year, and first team All-State, leading the Bears to the semi-finals of the state tournament. He attended the University of Vermont, where he served as soccer captain in his senior year and was the team’s leading scorer in 1993 and 1995. He received a variety of honors during his career at UVM, including being named to the 1995-1996 America East Academic Honor Roll. He later played professionally for the Vermont Wanderers, the Rhode Island Stingrays, and the Western Mass. Pioneers. He has coached both boys and girls soccer at SHS and is a teacher in the Exeter-West Greenwich, Rhode Island, school system.


Pete Young

Pete Young coached football, girls basketball, and golf at SHS. He was an assistant football coach from 1960-1975, during which time SHS won four Eastern Connecticut Conference championships, and for girls basketball from 1980-1997, during which time SHS won seven ECC titles and two Connecticut Class M titles. He was head golf coach from 1970-1997. His career record as head coach was 433-217-14, with his teams winning eight Eastern Connecticut Conference championships as well as state championships in 1979 and 1995. He was named Connecticut Golf Coach of the Year in 1996. He taught social studies at SHS from 1960 to 1995 and served as chairman of the Stonington Recreation Commission from its inception in 1963 until 1980.

Richard Chipperfield

Richard Chipperfield was an outstanding performer in football, basketball, baseball, and track at SHS. He served as captain for the basketball and baseball teams, and over four years earned ten varsity letters and was named first-team All-Conference seven times: twice each in football, baseball, and track, and once in basketball. He also earned honorable mention All-State recognition in football. He was a member of state champion football, basketball, and track teams as well as conference champion teams in all four of the sports in which he participated. He received an academic scholarship to Colgate University, where he participated in football, baseball, and boxing. He is also a member of the Electric Boat Athletic Club Hall of Fame.
