Welcome ! Math summer work for Grade 8 Advanced Math is Required (yellow section). Below this, please find Suggested Review and Resources (optional) work for all grades - including daily math calendars - for students entering grades 5 and 6, then 7 and 8.
Getting Ready for Grades Five and Six: Building and Sustaining Fluency
By grades five and six, students are expected to have mastered multiplication facts up to 10 × 10 and to fluently multiply and divide within 100 using strategies like fact families and properties of operations (e.g., knowing 8 × 5 = 40 helps solve 40 ÷ 5 = 8).
This fluency is key—not just for accuracy, but for freeing up mental energy to tackle more complex topics like fractions, long division, and multi-step problem solving. While these skills will continue to develop in middle school, starting strong gives students a clear advantage. Just a few minutes of consistent practice can make a meaningful impact.
To help your student maintain and build fluency over the summer, try a mix of engaging strategies—both on and offline:
Play multiplication fact bingo or memory card games.
Create and use flashcards during car rides or meal times.
Practice skip counting with jump ropes or clapping rhythms.
Display a multiplication chart at home for regular review.
Write and solve math facts outdoors with sidewalk chalk.
Use number cubes, playing cards, or dominoes for multiplication challenges.
Practice doubling or halving while cooking or baking together.
Set up a “fact wall” at home with sticky notes to track mastered facts.
Host family trivia nights featuring multiplication questions.
Consider interactive, online games like Math Playground, Prodigy, Multiplication.com
Fun, low-pressure activities help strengthen fluency and prepare students for a confident start to the new school year.
Looking forward to a fabulous fall!

Getting Ready for Grades Seven and Eight
Students entering grades seven and eight may also complete work in Summer Review Packets Part 1 and Part 2 which are posted above. Hard copies are available at CMS in the front office.
For grades seven and grade 8 Part 1 is recommended for all students.
Additional Resources - Math Calendars
In addition to Fluency, to support summer learning, we have Summer Math Choice Board Calendars. Students can select their upcoming grade level and complete daily puzzles designed to review key math concepts. Families are encouraged to help track learning throughout the summer.
Students who complete at least 25 days of activities on their calendar and have a parent or guardian sign off showing work completion, can bring their calendar in to their math teacher the first days of school to have their names entered for prize drawings!!!
Online Suggestions
While we hope that your family will spend most of their summer screen-free, online resources, including Khan Academy, provide detailed videos and practice for each topic for each grade as a preview or a refresher.
Ready for a challenge? CMS offers a math team for students who love challenging math. Get a head start by checking out study materials from the Intermediate Math League of Eastern Massachusetts: http://imlem.org/
Workbook Suggestions
For workbooks, we recommend students use the review book for the grade that they just completed. These workbooks are just a few of many that can be purchased from vendors like amazon, but they are a good resource to use if students need to strengthen some skills and prepare for next year. If you have concerns about being able to purchase these materials, but would still like a book,
please reach out to your student's guidance counselor.
