This year for incoming and current SCMS students, we are recommending summer learning resources for reading and math enrichment.
Summer learning for math enrichment may be completed by utilizing comprehensive review books from the Summer Skills education company. Summer Skills offers review books for each grade level. While these review books are not required and will not be graded, all students are encouraged to review their completed grade-level concepts during the summer to reduce skill regression.
Instead of summer reading being something that connects only to English classes, summer learning for reading enrichment is going to connect to multiple content areas and be used as a tool to build community within our school and to reinforce a love for learning. To encourage this love for learning, students will be able to select from a variety of podcasts, books (fiction, nonfiction, graphic novels), and articles that relate to a theme selected for each grade level. These themes are related to content that students will see in the coming school year in their ELA, Science, and/or Social Studies classes.
When students return to school in the fall, teaching teams will communicate with students about the timeline for completing activities and assignments related to the summer learning. Teachers will grade these activities, so it is extra important to our school community that all students participate. Please ensure that your student reads at least one NOVEL (one book or one graphic novel) AND listens to/reads/watches at least one of the podcasts, articles, or videos for their grade level for the 2025-2026 school year. If students want to read more than one selection, listen to more than one podcast, or do a combination THAT'S GREAT!
If none of the reading enrichment selections seem aligned with your student’s needs, they are welcome to select something related to the same theme so that they can still participate in the activities. The public library is a great resource for finding additional options.
Most of the selected titles are available through the public library and many of them are available as audiobooks. You can access them for free using your public library membership:
The school’s main office also has a bookshelf with copies of the summer learning books, You are welcome to stop into the office over the summer to sign one out. Please consider calling ahead to make sure that the office is open.
