Term 3 Concept - Creativity and Innovation
Concept Learning
The learners have launched into concept learning by talking about what creativity is. Over the next few weeks, the learners will have many opportunities to highlight their creativity with different materials and resources. Learners will also explore what it means to be curious and what it means to be imaginative.
We will use these simple definitions to help our young learners understand these big concepts.
Creativity is using your mind to think of new ideas or make something new.
Curiosity is like having a superpower called wonder. It's when you have lots of questions and want to learn new things. When you're curious, you're like a detective, searching for clues and discovering amazing secrets.
Imagination is like a superpower in your brain that lets you think of things that aren't right in front of you.
In Week 4, the learners will begin working in groups, on their passion-led break through projects. Their completed projects and the process the learners utilised to create their projects, will be displayed at the Break Through Exhibition.
It will be 'all hands on deck' as we get closer to the exhibition. So any offers of support before or during school time in Weeks 7-10 will be greatly appreciated.
Mark your calendars for Stonefields School's event of the year .....
The Break Through Exhibition 'Step up, Standout - Breakthrough, Breakout!' on Thursday 26 September.
Supporting Your Child with Concept Learning at Home
Ideas to support concept learning at home
Have conversations with your child using the simple definitions for creativity, curiosity and imagination (as above).
Ask open-ended questions like "what if.." to help foster your child's curiosity and wonderment.
"What if you could build a house made of candy? What would it look like?"
"What if you could be a character in your favourite story? Who would you be and what would you do?"
"What if you could invent a new toy? What would it do and how would you play with it?"
Provide opportunities for your child to play with open-ended toys like building blocks, art materials and costumes to stimulate their creativity.
"How would you design a house for a giant?"
"If your drawing could come to life, what would it do?"
"What if you could travel to the moon? What would you do there?"
Read stories together and ask open-ended questions to encourage your child to think creatively.
"What do you think happens after the end of this story?"
"If you could meet any character from a book, who would it be and what would you ask them?"
"How would you change the ending of your favourite story?"
We would love your child to share any passion projects they create at home. Please encourage your child to share their creations, photos of their creations etc with their hubs.
“Let’s get creating!
Every great idea starts with a dose of curiosity and a spark of imagination.”
Cross Country
The whole school Cross Country will take place on Monday 19 August with our junior learners taking part in the afternoon. The aim of the cross country is for the children to participate, have fun, and have an opportunity to show their determination. For this fun event, we'd love to see the kids dress up in one of our vision rock colours (as shown above).
We welcome parents and whānau to come along and cheer the children as they participate. See you there

Reminders
Library Days
Our learners love their weekly library visits. All Year 0-2 hubs will visit the library on Thursdays. During this time the children will have an opportunity to browse, borrow a book, listen to some stories, and learn some library skills. Please remind your child to bring their library book to school on their library day so they can return it and borrow a new book. Children get disappointed when they don't have their library book to return.
Toys from home
A friendly reminder that children are not allowed to bring toys or game cards like Pokemon cards to school. When these items are brought to school, they are disruptive and occasionally, items get lost. Kindly remind your child about this.
