In this session, we will endeavor to address this issue by modeling rich, rigorous units of study centered on books that are both "diverse" and "classic," demonstrating that increasing diversity in our reading lists does not require foregoing classic works of literature that have stood the test of time and that offer students literary art at its finest; contemporary books, representing some of the best work of the 21st century; and banned books, demonstrating that these works, far from being propaganda or even pornography, are works of literary art that will engage students in critical thinking and discourse on the very topics that our country must not turn away from.

This professional development introduces high school teachers to Stockton Unified's Native American Indian Studies course and California's Native American Studies Model Curriculum (NASMC). This workshop supports high school teachers in understanding the deep connections between Black & African American history and Filipino American history as foundational U.S. narratives, highlighting the solidarity between these communities through labor organizing, civil rights movements, and contemporary coalition-building. Participants explore how Stockton Unified's Integrated Ethnic Studies courses in these subjects offer students flexible pathways to meet California's Ethnic Studies graduation requirement or serve as alternatives to traditional U.S. History. Educators leave with concrete, immediately applicable pedagogical strategies and community-responsive teaching practices that work across all subject areas and grade levels.
