Clara Barton was one of the first women to work for a federal Government. When the American Civil War began in 1861, Clara Barton provided health care and supplies for the soldiers in need. Clara Barton got permission from President Abraham Lincoln to open up an office of Missing soldiers and helped more than 20,000 soldiers reconnect with their families. On May 21,1881 Clara Barton was founded the American Red Cross and by 1882 the U.S contracted Geneva Conventions laws that help soldiers that have been wounded to get health care. Clara Barton served as Red Cross President for 23 years Clara Barton retired in 1904 from the Red Cross. Clara Barton died at her house in Glen Echo Maryland on April 12, 1912 she was buried in her birthplace in North Oxford, Massachusetts.
