Stockton’s Commitment Speaker
Dr. Maya Lewis
BSSW Program Chair, Learning Community Coordinator
Dr. Lewis is the Associate Professor of Social Work, Program Chair of BSSW program, and Learning Community Coordinator at Stockton University. She graduated from Spelman College in 1993 with B.A. in Psychology, received her MSW from Washington University, and her Ph.D. from University of Maryland. With recognition from many offices, Dr. Maya Lewis has taken an active role in not only being a dedicated professor, but a true trailblazer in promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion with on and off campus initiatives.
In 2022, Dr. Maya Lewis and Yesenia Pacheco collaborated on "Woman’s W.O.R.T.H.,” a racial healing circle program dedicated to providing a safe space for students who identified as first-generation women of color. The program, an acronym that stands for “Working on Rebuilding Trust and Healing,” invited a cohort of six first-generation women of color to participate. All participants agreed in a post-event assessment that the sessions helped them engage with students, staff and faculty of culturally diverse backgrounds, to identify the strengths and values of culturally diverse communities and their role in promoting social justice.
Dr. Lewis has been passionate about providing more initiatives on campus to increase a sense of belonging for students. Using retention data and evidence found within institutional research, she saw the need to support students facing barriers to equity within higher education. Dr. Lewis understands the various mental, physical and emotional demands that impact a student’s persistence and graduation rates, especially with marginalized groups. She is a dynamic advocator for all students and has consistently led with a "student-centered" approach. Inside and outside of the classroom, Dr. Lewis is known for her commitment to helping students succeed. She is a great example of the commitment that all faculty and staff should make to help support our students.
