Mobile Phones in School

Circular 0045/2025 mandates all post-primary schools adopt a formal mobile‑phone restriction policy to reduce distractions, safeguard wellbeing, and bolster in-person interaction. It covers all students during school hours, including breaks and lunchtime when on campus but with clearly defined exemptions (see below)

Transition Year, Fifth & Sixth Years:

• Permitted to bring phones only during lunchtime when off campus, to facilitate payments in local shops.

• Phones must be stored securely when returning on campus.

Teacher‑Permitted Educational Use:

• Teachers may allow use in classes for educational purposes only (e.g. photograph project work for exam portfolios).

• Only the teacher may instruct activation of the phone.

• This will occur under strict guidance on consent and GDPR compliance: no images of others without permission.

Emergencies & Medical Needs:

• Students may be permitted to retain the mobile phone  (e.g. checking glucose levels).or  seek permission from the Office or Deputy Principal to use a phone in genuine emergency or health-related situations 

Special Educational Reasoning:

• Students with authenticated needs may be permitted on a case-by-case basis.

A formal policy will be put in place in consultation with parents , students and teachers in the new school year.
