Mobile Phones in School
Circular 0045/2025 mandates all post-primary schools adopt a formal mobile‑phone restriction policy to reduce distractions, safeguard wellbeing, and bolster in-person interaction. It covers all students during school hours, including breaks and lunchtime when on campus but with clearly defined exemptions (see below)
Transition Year, Fifth & Sixth Years:
Permitted to bring phones only during lunchtime when off campus, to facilitate payments in local shops.
Phones must be stored securely when returning on campus.
Teacher‑Permitted Educational Use:
Teachers may allow use in classes for educational purposes only (e.g. photograph project work for exam portfolios).
Only the teacher may instruct activation of the phone.
This will occur under strict guidance on consent and GDPR compliance: no images of others without permission.
Emergencies & Medical Needs:
Students may be permitted to retain the mobile phone (e.g. checking glucose levels).or seek permission from the Office or Deputy Principal to use a phone in genuine emergency or health-related situations
Special Educational Reasoning:
Students with authenticated needs may be permitted on a case-by-case basis.
A formal policy will be put in place in consultation with parents , students and teachers in the new school year.
