One of our 2025 PTA graduates, Iran Stern, completed an Assistant Mentorship Program with PTA Faculty Jon Duellman regarding community education for people living with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). She completed a literature review of exercise recommendations for MS, created an exercise program, and plans to present to and support a local MS support group this Summer. The AMP is a St. Kate’s funded student work project with guided mentorship from faculty to develop leadership skills using their education that benefits our local communities. Thank you, Iran, for your great work. - Jon Duellman, PT, DPT
Special Olympics
Project ALL-STAR
Students assisted with data collection for the Special Olympics Project ALL-STAR (Active Life and Longevity: Special Olympics Transforming Athlete Results) which is a longitudinal health project that aims to evaluate how participating in Special Olympics programming impacts athletes’ physical, mental, social, and emotional health over the long-term.
Specifically, DPT (and 2 pre-PT/OT) student volunteers assisted with the administration of several health and fitness tests (height and weight, 6-minute walk test, 10-meter agility shuttle run, standing long jump, single leg stance- eyes open and eyes closed, box sit and reach, modified Apley’s shoulder flexibility test, hand grip strength, maximal repetition curl-up, timed sit to stand, maximal repetition push-up, isometric push-up).
Overall, a great form of community service, good application of clinical and research skills, and good time for all! - Steve Elmer, PhD
