“I really enjoyed my practicum at the Schoenecker Law Library, as it allowed me to explore the many facets of legal librarianship. One highlight was learning about Douglas Hedin, whose life’s accomplishments included participating in the Civil Rights Movement and creating the Minnesota Legal History Project. I also enjoyed learning about the unique characteristics of legal treatises and the specialized collection development needs of a law library. This experience has broadened my appreciation for the diverse skills involved in librarianship!”
Nick completed his summer practicum at the Schoenecker Law Library at the University of St. Thomas. For his practicum, Nick was tasked with transforming a donation from the estate of a prominent Minnesota lawyer, Douglas Hedin, into a physical exhibit consisting of texts about U.S. and Minnesota legal history. Nick also evaluated sets of serials and legal treatises within the library’s collection for weeding purposes and made several recommendations for removal. Lastly, Nick developed a multi-channel marketing campaign designed to promote library resources to law students over the course of the 2026-2027 academic year. This practicum offered Nick a valuable glimpse into the inner workings of a law library, and helped familiarize him with the unique needs of legal collections.

My practicum entailed working at the horticultural library on the grounds of the Arboretum. Some of my work was paleography, transcribing cursive text from a tree nursery catalogue from Scotland in 1793, as well as going through hundreds of slides from a former Arboretum director and describing them, and working the desk and telling patrons about the Arboretum, our collection of rare materials, and the Nakashima furniture. My favorite part of the experience was working with the Swarthmore Apiary Collection, including photos and booklets about a beekeeper named Swarthmore, and translating a wooden postcard he received that was in German and came with queen bees he'd ordered from overseas!

My practicum experience was at an archive with Ramsey County Historical Society. For the most part, I was tasked to digitize files into the PastPerfect program which is based within Dublin Core, something I knew about but did not have a ton of experience with before this practicum. Once I got practice with individual files, I worked on completing the Florence Sinclair collection which had been worked on previously but not completed. Additionally, I started and completed the digitization of the Seth Eastman Artwork collection and also created finding aids for both. Overall, this experience was something that allowed me to apply my coursework and the theory that I learned in the classroom into real and practical experience. I really enjoyed diving into the history of the people whose records I was digitizing, becoming engrossed with their experiences in Minnesota at different points in history.

My internship at the Walker Art Center was such a fun and rewarding experience! I got to dive into the world of cataloging, which was pretty intimidating at first, but became much more intuitive as I went along. I cataloged around 100 books for the library's collection, learned to create my own MARC records, and gained experience with OCLC and Koha. Beyond cataloging, I also helped create artist book displays, worked public programming events, brainstormed ideas for a future library pop-up, and got to see some incredible exhibitions. I learned so much in a short time, but I enjoyed getting to know and being a part of the Walker’s library team the most (even if it was just for just a short period of time).
