Brittany Wirz
For LIS 7010: Introduction to Library and Information Science, Brittany Wirz researched the importance of digital preservation during the Russo-Ukrainian War.
Ukraine was not prepared for the Russian invasion, and the Russian military purposely targeted much of its history, culture, and documented war crimes committed by the Soviets. As of 2009, only 2% of their documents have been scanned and digitized. Since Ukraine has minimal funding and outdated supplies, many of its documents were not uploaded or digitized to a single database, so librarians and archivists are working quickly and quietly to do so. Since the start of the invasion, over 50 million documents have been destroyed, many of them not accounted for, so Ukrainian librarians and archivists are unsure of the totality of what records have been destroyed. They are currently determining which works are most important to their history and culture to digitize; many of the works will later be uploaded if resources are acquired and the war ends.

Megan Toner & Kevin Yang
This project started as two separate topic presentations for LIS 7590 Digital Libraries. Research on Digital Preservation was presented by Kevin Yang, and research on Social Media Archiving was presented by Megan Toner.
For the Summit, Megan and Kevin combined the two presentations to acknowledge how these topics are becoming more prevalent in the LIS field today. You can view their poster display on the right.
