This article from Ramsey County History covers the history of settling in St. Paul and the forming of the Macalester-Groveland neighborhood. One thing to consider is that the book was written in 1973 and focuses on settlers of European descent and does not paint the full picture of the people living in the area at the time.
When plans to tear down a historic home in Macalester Park became known, Saint Paul residents rallied to save the home and begin preservation efforts for historic properties in the area.
