Tuesday, April 18, 7 St. James High School students attended the Special Olympics at the Waynesville High School. The students go to the Olympics to compete against other students in the area.
The following students participated: Hadden Lewis, Loralie Pulley, Eric Bierman, Daten Hamilton, Josh Shultz, and Isiah Boulware. They teamed up with
their school to compete for personal placement in events, and for those who did not place, trophies were awarded to all who participated.
This annual event is hosted by Waynesville for the purpose of all students having a chance at competing in sports and feeling like a part of a team. This benefits students by letting them express what they enjoy doing, practice communication skills, and build on teamwork. This activity helps all students to feel accepted and included.
During the Olympics, there were
many regular track and field events that took place. Some of the most common ones consisted of shot put with a softball, or jumping events like long jump. They also had some running events like the 100 meter dash, and a few others.
Not every participant had to do every event, there were of course some people that did running only, some that did throwing only, and some that did a little bit of both if they wanted.
When interviewed about the experience, Bierman replied, “It went amazing, I had a lot of fun.”

In the tournament, they won one and lost two of their games. They played against Union and lost (5-2), Hermann and lost (6-3), and won against New Haven (0-6).

Coach Olivas responded by saying, “We all feel good about it.”
The primary three starting pitchers for St. James are senior left-hander Aiden Moffet, junior right-hander Aidan Stricklan, and junior right-hander Luca Giacolone.
When not pitching, Moffet is at first base. Also seeing time at first base will be junior James Perkins.
Senior Joey Ford is at second base. Battling for the shortstop position are freshman Cooper Schacht and sophomore Drake Plummer, and competing for time at third base are Giacolone and senior Aaron Skaggs.
“We have emphasized contact,” Olivas said of his offense. “We have had hard contact in batting practice. Moffet has worked a lot and it’s showing. He’s hitting hard line drives.”

Lady Tigers Go 1-1 at Preseason Jamboree; Lose to Marshfield in Season Opener
By Jillian Engelbrecht

March 14 marked the beginning of the St. James Ladies soccer 2023 season. They played in the jamboree against Sullivan and Belle High Schools on their home field where they earned victory over Belle 2-0 but lost against Sullivan 0-2.
Senior Livi Herron and Sophomore Haylee Carnessali scored 2 goals in the game against Belle.
Emily Mueller, the head coach of the SJHS soccer team said, “I feel confident about my team. In spite of the fact that we are still a work in progress, all of our girls are committed, willing to listen, and doing their best on the field... It would have been better if we had communicated better and been more aggressive. However, [this was] the first time half of our girls have ever played a game. I think we did well.”
She spoke about the jamboree and said it went well and that she was looking forward to the coming season.
The SJHS played a hard game against Marshfield as they were only down 2-0 by halftime. As they start the second half the Lady Tigers defense starts going down to Marshfield offense ending in an 8-0 mercy rule and sad loss.
This is her first year as a soccer coach and she excitedly remarked, “I love coaching soccer... My passion for the game is something that I share with these girls and I have so much fun watching them all grow as players.”
This writer, who played forward in the game on Tuesday, said, “I personally love the game of soccer and love playing with this team and am excited for more victories with them!”
The Lady Tigers will be back on the field Thursday, March 23, at Crocker. The game will begin at 5 p.m.

The St. James High School Girls’ Basketball team won the district tournament, February 27 through March 4, earning them a spot in the state tournament.
The girls earned a bye their first round of districts, then they played Cuba in the semi-finals and beat them by 56-21 before moving onto the championship against Salem and won by 57-49.
Kendall Costoplos and Emily Recker were First Team All-Conference, Livi Herron made Second Team All-Conference, and Lydia Kemnitzer made Sixth Girl of the Year.
The girls had to make some adjustments after senior Aly Bullock graduated, lots of the girls had to step up and take on different roles within the team.
Throughout the season there were tons of injuries, they had several injured ankles, and Lydia Kemnitzer tore her ACL towards the end of the year which affected the girls with everybody's roles being switched again.
The team has several seniors graduating this season, Livi Herron and Rylee Hancock and Tessa Crocker, all three of which fill big roles. Class 4 District 3 Coach of The Year Terry Wells states, “They’re great kids, I can't thank them enough for all the time and effort they gave me over the four years.” He hopes that next seasons’ team will be slightly different, but expects really good results. He plans to work on mental toughness, just overall defending better, and to find their identity in their defensive schemes.

The Saint James football team went against the Principia School District’s football team. Principia is the boarding school in Town and County Missouri. Every year, without fail, we lose to them but this year something changed. Camren Pankey, tight end defense, gave the score 20-14, Camren explained that “We had to work hard, they’re a decent school”. Camren never gave up on our school's football team, and we can all agree we have bigger and better school pride. Although we had a great season, it came to an end. Hard work from the St James Tigers Football team, waiting for the next season!

As the basketball season is rolling in, Terry Wells was asked a few questions about their pre-season. This season they are working on a new offensive system. As they only have 15 students on this team when they generally have between 18 to 20, all grades 9th through 12th, they are committed and putting in all the work they can before their season starts! The basketball girls are having a soup scrimmage on November 18, at the middle school. The community is more than welcome to come. Followed by the first basketball game of the year on Saturday November 19.

Last month, Alexus Freeman broke the previous strikeout record of 139 and set a new record of 181.
To Lexy, softball means getting to work as a team with her best friends and help the upcoming generation of softball players. Advice she has is “play multiple positions, don’t be stuck with just one, you never know when your opportunity is gonna come up for you to shine at a new position.”
Freeman has always shined on and off the field. It’s common knowledge that she will be a star on any team but she will always be a St. James Lady Tiger at heart.

Sophomores Lydia Kemnitzer, Cally Gibson, and Ally Hartley and junior Gracie Satterfield all earned all-conference honors.
Following the season, the Lady Tigers competed in the district meet and almost earned a spot at state.
“We were one step away from having a girl actually win at districts to compete for state, and that was Cally GIbson,” Coach Kristen Lorts said.
Coach Lorts is proud of her team for winning postseason honors in only their second year of having a golf program. “Last year was our first year having girls’ golf at all. We made huge improvements last year…and I can’t wait to see how we do next year.”

On Tuesday October 18, the St. James Tigers Cross Country team had their Four Rivers Conference Championship meet. This conference was held in Washington and hosted by Union. The team wasn't big enough to place in conference, but all five runners did exceptionally well. The team is led by Coach Joe Campbell. When asked about his motivation behind coaching Cross Country, Coach Campbell said “Spending time with fantastic kids in a sport that I like.” Team members are juniors Vanessa Perona, Luke Shields, Kaiden Snyder, M’Lynn Steen, and freshmen Johnny Perkins. In the women's varsity 5,000 meters race Vanessa Perona placed fifth with a time of 21:36.42 and M’Lynn Steen placed 33rd with a time of 25:46.03. In the mens varsity 5,000 meters race, Luke Shields placed 22nd with a time of 19:57.65 and Kaiden Snyder placed 27th with a time of 20:44.70. In the men's junior varsity 5,000 meters race, Johnny Perkins placed 3rd with a time of 20:50.46. Coach Campbell said the best part about this conference meet was “Just seeing the great competition not only for St. James, but the other schools running and the weather was nice. It was cool and the leaves were falling so it was a peaceful, nice day.” It takes a lot to be a cross country runner, it takes a lot of training and you have to keep in shape year round. “The training, what it takes is running all summer long. Having run at four miles, five miles. long runs of ten or twelve miles on a weekend. interval work on a track, running lots of hills.” - Coach Campbell.

The St. James Lady Tiger Softball season came to an end in the first round of the district tournament last week to a tough Blair Oaks team who was state ranked #4 in Class 3.
After losing six starters from last year's team, there were a lot of changes and improvements to be made, but according to coach Brad Purvis, this year's team made lots of progress. The returning seniors and juniors took on new roles with the team.
This year's star players were:
Alexus Freeman: 1st Team-All-Conference & 1st Team-All-District (Alexus also broke and set the single team season record by recording 181 strikeouts as a pitcher. The previous record was 139 strikeouts.)
Karen Goodin: 1st Team-All-Conference & 2nd Team-All-District
Emily Recker: 2nd Team-All-Conference & 2nd Team All-District
Jacey Spurgeon: 2nd Team-All-Conference & 2nd Team All-District
Baylee Maxwell: All-Conference Honorable Mention
The seniors on the team were Martiera Curtis and Spurgeon. Coach Purvis said, “They played an integral part in the success of our team both on and off the field. They are two fun spirited individuals who we will dearly miss. I would like to personally thank them for making me a better person/coach and it has been an honor to serve as their high school softball coach.”

Five St. James volleyball seniors celebrated senior night on October 18th at St. James High School against the Union Lady Wildcats. This year’s seniors are Heather Austin, Lily Cross-Baker, Hannah Salter, Rylee Hancock, and Allyson Carroll.
Baker says, volleyball has taught her that it takes a lot of dedication, and teamwork too be able to achieve things together,
“You have to stay positive and focus on the good before you lose yourself in the bad. I've made a lot of friends through volleyball, and have found some belonging through that. I think it's really important for kids in high school to be a part of something, to be a part of a team or a club or anything like that, so that they can find what they're good at, and find a sense of, like I said, belonging and purpose within their school. That was volleyball for me in a way.”
