Rihanna Rocks Super Bowl Halftime Performance - An Opinion
By Savannah Smith
You’ve heard of the Super Bowl, but did you expect your favorite team to win? Or did you expect Rihanna’s halftime show to be gratifying? I believe the show was extremely boring. Not much excitement was brought to the show.
The halftime show wasn’t bad at all, but compared to last year, it was a very plain performance. The Super Bowl Halftime show was performed by Eminem, 50 Cent, Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, Mary J. Blige, and Kendrick Lamar. I believe 2022’s performance was more exciting because there were more performers and much more going on than there was in Rihanna’sproduction costs.” Rihanna was paid in “exposure,” but that isn’t quite fair when she was the only performer this year.
For me, I think it would be a waste of time to work if I’m not being paid. But this may have been beneficial for Rihanna because she got a big chance to show off her makeup brand.
During the halftime show, a lot of people, including me, saw Rihanna’s gain in weight. The most searched question regarding the Super Bowl was “Is Rihanna pregnant?” according to FootWear News.
What did you think about Rihanna’s performance? Did you like it or hate it? No matter what you decide, I believe that Rihanna should not have been a choice this year. If I had to pick I would have someone more well-known and relevant to that year or era.
Vaping Is A Continuous Problem - An Opinion
By Royal Newton
Vaping has become a well known issue in schools and has been going on for far longer than wanted.
Students will take up stalls in the bathrooms, causing students in a rush to be late to class. Sometimes students will gather around and crowd the bathroom making it difficult for others to use the bathroom for its intended use.
I feel as though just telling students to get out of the bathroom isn’t doing anything to stop the issue. I know the school and the staff are doing other things about it, and they can't erase the problem over a semester, but it feels that the problem isn’t getting better.
As someone who started off with great attendance, I watched it go down with tardies. I am forced to either run around and find a bathroom or wait until I am able to go home. Devin Johnson stated in his interview that “The school actually put in a grant for [a vape detector], and we were denied.”
Vaping in the school bathroom is a rampaging problem, and it affects everyone.
According to Johnson, of the things the school is doing to combat the ongoing problem is the implementation of the E-Hallpass system. Johnson said, “A student will ask to use the restroom. They will sign out using their iPad from their classroom. They'll denote which bathroom they're going to, and they'll sign back in when they get back in there.”
The E-Hall pass can be used to monitor bathroom use for cases like vaping in the bathrooms and security. This is a school wide problem and involves everyone's support.
Easter is Over Commercialized:
An Opinion
By Kaylee Kraczek
20139@stjschools.org
Is Easter about the Christian faith or the bunny who lays chocolate eggs? Easter has been so over commercialized over the years that I believe we have lost the true meaning of the holiday.
The over-commercialization of Easter has changed many things as to how we celebrate Easter. In the Christian faith it is a celebration of new life, of resurrection, of the archetypal loving deed done on behalf of others. It is about seeking for the best part of ourselves, our spirit, as well as spending time with family and friends.
Commercialization of Easter has led to several companies and online websites such as Macy’s, Target, Walmart, and Amazon having “deals” and “discounts” for the Easter holiday.
According to the website Peace Love and Chocolate, “Over 90 million chocolate Easter bunnies are produced every year. Sixty million of those are consumed in the U.S. alone!”
James Barnett, in his article analyzing the cultural shift in the commercialization of Easter, stated, “Commercial advertising suggests and extols the desirability of personal enjoyment and self-indulgence at Easter. This is directed at women in particular where clothes, perfumes, and flowers are concerned, but includes children also, and adult males to a lesser degree.”
In the previous year, the U.S alone spent $2.26 billion on Easter candy and an estimate of $21.7 billion on Easter gifts.
According to the National Confectioner’s Association, more money is spent on candy on Easter than Christmas with only spending $1.4 billion and for Valentine's Day spending just over $1 billion.
Why Are We Mean?
An Opinion
By Julia Jacobs
You may ask, “Julia, you’re a student. Why are you writing a story about students and teachers being stressed out at each other?”
You want to know why? I watch students and teachers disrespect each other everyday, and here’s why I think it’s happening.
Students are stressed. It’s obvious. We go through eight hours a day, eight different subjects, and we are expected to remember it all.
Teachers are given the task of dealing with hormonal, stressed, growing, and very mean teenagers for eight hours a day. Who has it worse? Well, that’s up to you.
Teachers have to do their jobs whether students like it or not. They have to grade our work and they have to put the zero in when it isn’t completed.
Teachers used to be students. They should understand how stressful being a student is and take that into account.
According to a June 2022 poll done by CNBC, K-12 teachers have the highest burnout rate of all U.S. professions. In fact, four out of every ten teachers report that they feel burned out “always” or “very often” at work.
On the flip side, in the Anxiety and Depression Association of America’s study, 80% of students in the United States report feeling stressed while 34% report feeling depressed.
Now, to finish, whether you are a student or a teacher, EVERYONE has days that they are overwhelmed and stressed.
So, next time a teacher snaps at you or the next time a student breaks down in the middle class, put yourself in each other’s shoes before casting judgment.
The Last of Us - A SciFi Drama vs. Video Game Review
By Logan Stutzman
35842@stjschools.org
The Last of Us show has recently come out and it’s absolutely phenomenal. The new show is based off of the video game, The Last of Us. I know, shocker, it’s the same name.
In the game, which was released in 2014, you play as Joel Miller, a 52 year old Texan that goes through a fungal pandemic. He’s tasked with escorting the possible cure for mankind across the country in return for something he’s been desperately wanting. He’s accompanied by a young girl named Ellie. She’s a witty teen who isn’t too fond of Joel and grew up knowing nothing else but the Quarantine Zone, or the QZ.
The show is not much different; Joel’s the same Texan who goes through the same fungal pandemic that throws him into a dangerous, crazy world. He’s still challenged with escorting the cure and he’s accompanied by Ellie, the same witty girl you interact with in the game.
Joel is played by Pedro Pascal who I believe plays the role perfectly. Ellie is played by Bella Ramsey who did get some backlash for the role because people believed she wouldn’t portray the character correctly. I must admit, I was a little hesitant with her when I first started watching but as I went through, her acting has grown on me because she gives off the same attitude towards Joel and life just as she does in the game.
The game and the show have had amazing comparisons between them, from the scenes and the characters, to the music and the different infection stages.
The infection is quite an interesting topic. It’s a fungus called Cordyceps which is a real life fungus that infects the body and tells the brain what to do. Ants are known for being a main host to the fungus. But don’t fret, it can’t infect the human body because the human body heat is too high and our immune system is a lot stronger compared to ants. It could truly happen though if those things were to change, plus funguses can evolve, but luckily they evolve very slowly.
There are a few stages to being infected, the most shown stages were the “runners” and the “clickers.” Runner’s are known for being very quick but clumsy with their attacks. A clicker is completely blind since the fungus covers most of their face and leaves them with an unpleasant look.
Something that they did change between the game and the show is that in the game, there's these things called “spores” which are corpses of the infected that give off infective air particles. If you breathe those in, you die. But in the show, that isn’t the case. The spores aren't even a thing but instead the infected are all connected by the fungus. Which means if you hit, cut, or hurt anything connected to the fungus, then others infected from miles away will feel it and know where you are.
I think the show has been an incredible representation of the game so far and it’s been put together beautifully.
If you’re interested in playing the games, The Last of Us Part 1, and The Last of Us Part 2, they can be played on Playstations and will soon be released for PC’s.
If you’re interested in watching the show, it can be found on HBO Max with a monthly subscription. Episodes are released every Sunday besides this next Sunday because the Super Bowl will be taking place, so it’ll be released Friday instead.
