B - 10th Ordinary

The Family of Christ

In worship this week, we looked ahead to the 10th Sunday in Ordinary Time and the challenging question from Jesus, "Who is my mother and my brothers?"

On the face of it, Jesus is disowning his own family! However, a more assuring message we can read into these words is that our home family is only one experience of family within the Christian life. All are welcomed to be brothers and sisters in God's Kingdom. Jesus explains, "Anyone who does the will of God is my sister and brother."

We have encouraged the children this week to recognise that they are all brothers and sisters in their class families and that modelling their behaviour on Christ will make for a harmonious family life indeed!

Wonderful Weaving

You may recall hearing about some fantastic artistic creations by Year 4 in the first half of the Summer Term and we couldn't resist the opportunity to update you on their progress! Having already completed some stunning stitching, Year 4 moved on to some wonderful weaving. Using wool to create a 'tree' on a plate, the children then wound the wool over and under each branch, creating a woven effect. The results were incredible!

The children were thrilled to be taking these home with them this week and even more delighted to be told that they still have more chances to practice their embroidery during DT week, coming up later in the term.

The Lady with the Lamp

What a fantastic day we had this week celebrating Florence Nightingale! The children took part in various activities such as role play, concocting ginger beer and making medals. We learned about how Florence would have cleaned the hospitals using very ancient tools, as well as chopping and cooking food and learning to write in different ways with feather quill.

Learning in this way through experiences really helps to hook the children into their learning. Everyone had a great day!

Hammer Skills!

This week the Nursery children have been trying out some woodwork skills. They have had the opportunity to use a hammer and some stencils independently. The introduction of this woodwork has provided another media through which the children can express themselves. Creative and critical thinking skills are central both in terms of imagination and problem solving as the children make choices, find solutions, learn through trial and error and reflect on their work.

Enterprising Entrepreneurs

Year 6 have been hard at work this week. Forming a group of business partners and being gifted a 5 million pound loan, they were tasked with the challenge of designing a new theme park. Each group had to consider their theme and target market as well as what rides they wanted and what amenities would be required. Using a budget sheet, they planned their parks, accounted for running costs and then worked out a ticket price to ensure a healthy profit. This project drew on a variety of skills, including problem solving, working collaboratively and calculations of large numbers. Well done Year 6!

Digging for Dinos!

This week Reception has focused on dinosaurs, on Tuesday a large footprint entered the classroom and this sparked the children’s curiosity. On Thursday, Dinosaur Johnathan came in to help the children learn all things dinosaurs. The children were able to dig for fossils and even had the chance to meet a ‘real’ dinosaur.

Biscuit Business

In DT this week, Year 3 were set the task to create a box to protect, preserve and contain biscuits - after all, nobody wants to eat broken biscuits! After looking at a selection of food packaging, the children explored different nets and considered which shape they would choose for their biscuit container. The next step was to design the packaging, making it attractive and appealing to customers. The following lessons involved the skills of measuring, cutting, folding and assembling until a final biscuit container was produced. Finally it was testing time with real biscuits! Did the biscuit container meet the design criteria? Children discussed what had gone well and how they would improve their product before completing a written evaluation. A busy and enjoyable couple of days!

Signs of Christ

Starting our new Dialogue and Encounter topic in RE, Year 1 spent time exploring what makes someone a Christian this week, including a trip to St Mary's Church to find symbols of Christianity. We discovered many things including the church itself, the cross, the Bible, and our actions and beliefs.

Houses of a different kind...

Year 5 took a trip to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry this week! On Tuesday morning, each child in Year 5 received a letter inviting them to attend the mysterious school, shortly after we headed down to the Grand Hall where the children were assorted into their Hogwarts House. From the courageous Gryffindors, loyal Hufflepuffs, witty Ravenclaws and ambitious Slytherins, we are ready to immerse ourselves into some high-quality writing for the coming weeks.

St George's Family

Congratulations to 1G for a beautiful class worship this morning! Through song, dance and drama the children helped us to recognise and celebrate that all families are different and all families are special. We can end the week with confidence that we are warmly invited to live and love as members of God's family - the Church.

Family Witnesses

Our thanks to these fabulous young people for their witness to the value of family this week. These children have demonstrated through their words and actions that they recognise the importance of cherishing others as their brothers and sisters in Christ's special family, the Church.
