Three in One

We return again to the liturgical colour green as we continue to journey through the season of Ordinary Time with this week’s celebration of the Holy Trinity.

Whilst the mystery of the Holy Trinity can never fully be explained or understood, we have supported children this week to recognise the following facts about our faith:

We believe in one God
We can recognise God as Father, Son & Holy Spirit
We can see echoes of this union in nature (steam/water/ice) and our own identities (sister/pupil/friend)

We have been looking out to celebrate those children who recognise their identity as children of St Joseph's means that they follow Christ's way, seek his truth and embrace life to the full!

B - Holy Trinity

Perfect Prints

This week in Art, Year 5 have been learning all about repeated patterns and printing. We have focused on the work of William Morris and the children replicated his style (including his use of nature themed patterns) to create a repeated pattern through printing. Their outcomes were extraordinary!

Plant-astic!

Year 3 has been creating plants, recalling all the different features a plant needs to grow healthily in a garden. The children were actively engaged in a challenge to build the best plant, explaining to the class why they had added specific features and their functions.

How much does a seed need?

In groups, the children had to investigate how much light, soil, water, or air was needed to germinate and grow healthy cress. They planned and set up their cups, trying to keep most conditions the same and only changing one variable. After a week we looked at the results and decided which amount produced the healthiest cress. Look what we found out!

New ways to learn...

In our topic, Year 2 have been learning about significant people in history. We have covered many facts about Florence Nightingale and this week we started looking at Mary Seacole. In order to give the children an opportunity to research Mary, it was important that they can understand how we find out about the past and identify different ways to represent it. The children used books, iPads, Chromebooks and fact sheets to answer questions about Mary. We found out that her nickname with Mother Seacole, and that she married someone called Edward Seacole. She opened a hospital called The British Hotel.

Nursery Champions!

The Nursery children had visitor this week - Rachel. Rachel is an athlete who has taken part in many Paralympic Games competing in cycling and rowing.

She came to talk to the children about her medals and how she uses the wheels of her wheelchairs, like you would wear different shoes for different things. Such as trainers for running and wellington boots for splashing in the puddles. Rachel has different wheels for different activities.

The children enjoyed holding her medals, especially the heavy gold medal. Rachel explained that some of the medals are of a varying weight to help the blind athletes identify which medal is being awarded. Rachel also showed us another medal which made a sound when shaken, to help some athletes identify the medals. Rachel was full of positivity and this spread across to the children who identified that although she was in a wheelchair, she could still do lots of the things they could do. This was a lovely experience for the children and helped them understand how the world around them may be slightly different for different people.

At the palace...

What a fantastic day Year 1 had at Hampton Court on Tuesday! The children were amazed and inspired by the huge, royal palace, the size of the kitchens and the portraits hanging in the hallways. We had a fantastic workshop led by Lady Jane, one of Anne Boleyn's ladies in waiting, where the children learnt how to respectfully greet the monarchs of the day. They also learnt a Tudor dance and looked at real objects which the Tudors might have used. Finally, we enjoyed a trip to the maze and managed to not get lost!

Exploring Texture

Year 4 have enjoyed a different Art session this week. Having previously looked at working with various materials to paint and sculpt, we spent a morning combining the two, by studying texture in Art. The children were particularly fond of a painting of waterlilies where the petals were curling at the edges, due to the way the artist had painted the picture. It was amazing how much the children already knew about Art, naming famous pieces like the Mona Lisa and Sunflowers. We discussed how, although some of this Art may have an interesting texture, we should always look and not touch!

During the afternoon, the children explored a variety of stitches in preparation for creating an embroidered picture after half-term. We were surprised at the number of children who took to this with ease, and were pleased to see how enjoyable they found the afternoon. However, when we told Year 4 that, as they were such experts now, we couldn't wait for them to sew all of the buttons back on our shirts and bring in all of our old clothes for them to mend, they seemed less pleased!

Reception to the Rescue!

Reception have been busy planning for their superhero party today. At the beginning of the week the children wrote lists, ready for our shopping trip to the Co-Op. The children loved shopping for the items on their lists and were excited to use real money, even waiting to collect their change.

Music Maestro!

This week Year 6 have enjoyed a musical unit based on the song 'Happy' by Pharrell Williams. We learnt and performed the song, played the xylophone along with the tune and improvised and noted our own compositions to the piece. To develop our musical ear, we listened and appraised a variety of music, including 'I'm Walking on Sunshine' which had us singing and dancing around the classroom!

1A in Unity

Our thanks to St Andrew's Class for a beautiful worship this morning, focused on the theme of the Holy Trinity. The children shared with us the precious words of the prayer, The Glory Be and helped us to understand the mystery that God is three in one. The children read, sang and performed with such confidence - sharing their own identities and heritages as a way of supporting us to understand the Trinity is the perfect union, just as we are called in live in unity too. God bless you 1A - what a special worship!

Witness Winners!

Our thanks to this week's band of Witness Award winners, all of whom have shown their understanding of the Trinity by seeking to live out their identity as children of St Joseph's in a way that builds God's Kingdom. They have shown that the harmony of a happy school makes the world a better place.
