A - 6th Ordinary

The Law of Christ

This week, we looked ahead to the 6th Sunday in Ordinary Time (Year A) where Jesus reminds his disciples of the importance of following the Ten Commandments to lead a full life. This forms part of Jesus' Sermon on the Mount, as he says to his companions, "I have come to complete the law."

We used this opportunity to reflect on the purpose and importance of rules and the need to obey them, both in the law in this country and across the world, and within our school community. We reflected on the importance of our Fundamental British Values (including The Rule of Law) and the role of our two school rules - ask your child if they know them; I am confident they will!

Feeling Arty in Year 6

In Art, Year 6 have been exploring texture. We began with a lesson where the children researched three different artists, who use different textures, and created an information page all about them. The artists we looked at were: Jill Denton, Bisa Butler and Linda Caverly. There was a lot of discussion surrounding the artwork and children shared what they liked or disliked about different pieces. The children then had the opportunity to experiment with different materials and textures and they recorded what these materials could represent. Following this, the children selected materials for a specific outcome - a mixed media landscape. By the end of the week, the children had worked collaboratively in pairs to create some beautiful pieces of artwork that they were extremely proud of; each of them showed off their abilities to experiment, invent and create.

Reception Post!

This week the children had an exciting adventure outside of school! We have been learning about the people who help us in our local community and this week focused on postal workers. To learn more about the journey of a letter, the children wrote their own letter and posted it in our local letter box. The walk was very exciting, we looked at a map beforehand to help us plan our route. On the walk, we saw our local shops and also someone cutting down a tree. This sparked the children's curiosity to wonder how the man was safe and how he didn't fall out of the tree. Another child was able to tell us how the man had ropes on him to stay safe.

The children also noticed how some of their letters had a stamp with a number 1 on and some with a number 2. We discussed how this means some letters will arrive home faster. Has your letter made it home yet?

Songbirds in Year 3

Over the past few weeks, Year 3's music lessons have been focusing on the song Three Little Birds by Bob Marley. After listening and appraising the song, the children looked at the structure of the song i.e chorus, verse, instrumental. We then recalled our recorder playing skills from Year 2 and began composing our own tunes using 4 beats to a bar. We learned how to record the musical notes on a stave and took some time to practise our tunes. This week we proudly performed Three Little Birds using singing, actions and our own compositions.

Hats off to Year 1!

Year 1 have been enjoying the book 'The Queen's Hat' in our English lessons. If you know the story well, you will know that the queen's hat blew off of her head and all around the famous sights of London. To experience what this may have been like, we put hats on our heads and re-created a windy day using fans. The children loved being immersed in the experience and came up with some fantastic vocabulary to describe what a windy day is like, ready for our writing the next day.

Spelling Success!

On Monday afternoon, seven Year 4 pupils attended the annual Spell it Challenge at Longacre School. The pupils participated in a range of activities, from rearranging anagrams to identifying the spelling mistakes as well as having to spell challenging words. They were incredibly resilient and had a wonderful afternoon putting their spelling skills to the test. Their hard work paid off with their excellent results, with one pair coming third overall! Well done to all pupils who attended.

Expert Artists in Year 2

The children have been exploring the work of different still life artists, such as Matisse and Van Gogh. This gives them the skills to make comparisons and link their styles to their own work. The children recreated Van Gogh's 'Sunflowers' using a variety of mediums (pastels, colouring pencils, crayons, paint), as well as thinking about how pictures can depict different moods. The children finished off by drawing their own objects.

Inside your insides...

As part of their human biology unit, Year 6 have been learning about the circulatory system, in particular, how and why blood is pumped around the body. To help aid their understanding of the different components of blood; the children were delighted to be told they would be making their own! Can you see what we used to show the different elements - red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets and plasma? Using what we learnt about the ingredients of blood, we then translated this information into a pie chart, drawing on a range of mathematical skills. A fantastic afternoon- keep up this fabulous work Year 6!

Ready for Lent

This week in nursery we have been very busy making pancakes! The children have not only been enjoying eating some delicious pancakes, they have been learning social skills, developing language, some mathematics, understanding about the process we need to follow to make pancakes, and learning about the world around them (in terms of the Catholic beliefs through this experience).

We have learnt to take turns while making the mixture, new vocabulary (such as ingredients, recipe, grams, millimetres, weighing scales), exposure to some high numbers like 200 grams and 600 millimetres, while also learning and seeing how the solid ingredients turn into the final yummy pancakes.

To extend the pancake fun we had an obstacle course, where the children had to complete obstacles while holding a toy frying pan with a paper pancake inside. The children thoroughly enjoyed trying to not to drop their pancake while going through some cones, climbing through a tent and balancing along the beams.

All of these experiences helped us to explain lent and how we can prepare for Easter and the next part of the Catholic journey towards Easter.

Out of this world!

Year 5 recently visited Royal Observatory Greenwich as part of their Science topic 'Earth and Space'. Whilst there, the children were able to use their knowledge to take part in interactive and observatory led sessions. The highlight of the day was the planetarium show which enabled the children to experience the universe on our doorstep in a real and meaningful way. This was a wonderful way to consolidate our learning and thank you to the parent helpers who accompanied us on this amazing trip.

Finding the difference

This week, Year 4 have taken Maths outdoors by exploring fractions on the playground. Issued with the vague instruction of "show me the difference between tenths and hundredths" and armed with a metre stick and a box of chalk, the children worked together to construct pictorial representations of their knowledge. Luckily, the weather was kind which allowed the children to display their growing confidence in what can be quite a tricky concept. It was a talking point for the other year groups at playtime as well!

Goldirocks!

It has been another creative week in Reception. After retelling the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears, we read an alternative version, Goldirocks!

The children then proceeded to make their own musical instruments and even create their own band. We have quite a few rockstars in Reception now!

4B Follow the Rules

Our thanks to St Bernadette's Class for a wonderful class worship this week. It was an epic production featuring whales, shipwrecks and inflatable palm trees! The children retold the memorable story of Jonah - the prophet who refused to follow God's rules. He was too overwhelmed by the expectations on him. However, 4B showed us that God was patient with Jonah and helped him to think carefully about what was being asked of him. Eventually, Jonah gained the confidence and clarity to be able to carry God's message to the people of Nineveh and saved their city! What a remarkable assembly 4B - thank you for helping us to follow the rules too.

Obedient Witnesses

Congratulation to this wonderful sea of children, all of whom have been praised for their particular willingness to follow the rules and laws of areas of school life with total obedience. Thank you for showing us that self-discipline is the best kind of discipline.
