Christ our Role Model

We looked ahead to the Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time (Year A) in worship this week. We heard Jesus motivating his disciples by assuring them, "You are the salt of the earth." Reflecting on our knowledge of salt, to help understand this idiom, we determined that salt helps to bring the best flavour out of food. It was also used in Jesus' time to help preserve food and keep it 'good'.

In the same way, as disciples of Christ, we are called to bring the best out in others and to help them see and respond to the goodness of God's grace in their lives. We can be role models of Christian living by giving others a flavour of his Good News.

A - 5th Ordinary

Quick March, Year 4!

This week, Year 4 learned why the Romans were such a ‘fine fighting machine.’ They had advanced equipment: helmet, shield, hobnailed sandals and armour; weapons: gladius (short sword), dagger, pilum (spear) and they had superior organisation: legions of 5000 men organised, battle plans, formations and tactics. We practised some of the formations including the testudo and learnt several Latin phrases that were used in the army.

Sculpting Year 1

In Art, Year 1 have started to explore sculpture. We begun the lesson with the question 'What is a sculpture?' which led to all kinds of discussions and ideas. From this, we explored the fact that they can be made out of just about anything! Children had time to investigate and create their own sculptures out of classroom objects and the results were very impressive! Following this, we will be exploring the sculpture work by Peter Callesen and Su Blackwell before making our own sculptures out of paper, and finally clay.

Handiwork in Year 3

This week in Science, we have been learning how our hand works. First, we thought about what we already knew before discovering new facts. Did you know the hand has 27 bones? It has three bones in each finger, but the thumb has only two! The muscles from your arm and palm pull on the tendons, which are attached to your finger bones, and our fingers then move. It is amazing.

We made finger models to show the process. First, we cut out the model and bent it into a finger shape. Next, we tied the string representing our tendon to the top of our finger and threaded it through. When we pulled on the tendon, our fingers bent forward at the hinge joints. If we were quick enough, we joined more fingers together to make our hand. It was great fun.

The lesson ended with a quiz which we aced!

Numbers are getting big in Reception!

The children have been loving learning about numbers over the past few weeks. In class we have been learning all about 10, and finding 2 number pairs that make 10. It was a very exciting day when we made a bus in class to help us find pairs of numbers to make 10. At the first stop there were 5 people, and only 10 people could get on the bus. Do you know how many spaces were left?

Learning about 10 as been very inspiring and after making a number hop scotch to 10 outside, some children wanted it to go to 100! After lots of perseverance and concentration, a few children managed it. The hop scotch was so long as we learnt that 100 is a big number and a lot greater than 10!

Online Safety

This week in PSHE, as part of our learning about the safe use of technology in our online life, Year 6 played a fascinating game which helped us to understand how App developers make their money from our personal information. We discussed revenue versus responsibility and what we as users can do to keep ourselves safe as well as what the industry must do as part of their duty to protect us.

During this month, many celebrate ‘Time to Talk’ day on the 2nd February. Sitting down for a meal and talking with your family is really important as it allows you to discuss feelings and worries. Why don’t you try cooking a new recipe together and enjoy eating this as a family? Let us know what you cook! We would love to see some pictures too.

Alternatively, you may like to send in pictures/certificates or trophies of activities you like to take part in or your favourite toys at home.

Year 2's Guildoford

The children have been learning about how Guildford has changed over time, including the urbanisation of it and the inclusion of new hospitals and schools to meet the growing population. The children learned that Guildford started as a valley and, as the sea level decreased, the River Wey was formed and Guildford developed around it.

Exploring the Garden

This week Nursery have been spending time in the garden. They have been taking full advantage of the sand pit; learning to take turns with the sand toys. Additionally, they have used various resources to make their own assault course; to aid co-ordination and gross motor development.

Digital Art in Year 5

This week, Year 5 have been learning about vector drawings - how they are created and what they may be used for. We had a wonderful day creating all different kinds of vector drawings from houses to animals to flowers and stationary objects.

2W Role Models

Congratulations to St William's Class for a beautiful worship on role models. We heard all about who the children look up to and how their lives are inspired by the work of role models around them. Of course, we concluded that the best way to live our own lives is by modelling them on Christ himself. God bless you 2W!
