A - Palm Sunday

Celebrating Christ

In our last Gospel Worship of the Spring Term, we looked ahead to Palm Sunday. This marks the start of Holy Week as we journey with Jesus into Jerusalem. Palm Sunday Mass actually begins outside of the church, so we can replicate the movement and energy of the crowd as they celebrate Jesus' arrival in Jerusalem.

The theme of celebration is a wonderful way to end our Spring Term - we have so much to celebrate as a school community: Mrs Trowbridge and Mrs Pilling have achieved 25 years' service and Mrs Catchpole, who is moving on to an exciting new challenge, has supported hundreds of children pastorally over her time at the school.

We have encouraged the children this week to hold onto the many moments of celebration we encounter each day that help us to see that Jesus is alive in our community.

Quiz Time!

This week in Computing, Year 5 have been learning about programming, specifically learning how to use conditions and outcomes in Scratch to make a science or maths quiz. The children had a lot of fun using their prior knowledge of Space and Times Tables to create quizzes using different actions for the 'sprite' depending on whether the question is answered correctly or not.

New Life!

Nursery have been learning to take care of ducklings as they explored how living things grow and change. See their awesome video diary of the last two weeks...

Water Cycle

Year 4 enjoyed recreating the water cycle this week, with a few household items: sandwich bags, food colouring and permanent markers. We have been fascinated to watch, as the bags were stuck to the windows, the warm air causing the water to evaporate and then condense again at the top of the bags before evidence of precipitation could be seen with trickles back into the reservoir.

Netball Success

The Year 4 netball team have been training hard all term, working towards the highly anticipated netball tournament at Holy Trinity School, which took place yesterday. The team worked incredibly well together, showing all the characteristics of future sporting superstars - enthusiasm, determination and perseverance.

They began the tournament with a well deserved win against Holy Trinity's first team, and lost narrowly to Holy Trinity's second team. This was followed by a draw against Send, and finished with a win against Worplesdon. The team were rewarded for their hard work, winning the tournament overall and taking home some shiny, gold medals! What an incredible way to be able to celebrate this week's Gospel theme of celebration! Congratulations to you all!

A special thank you should also go to Izzy in Year 6, who has been an incredible role model, sharing her passion, dedication and commitment to sport with the younger children.

At the car wash...

Reception were busy making their own car wash this week! They set up their own stall and created a bay for the vehicles to park in. Lots of soapy water and sponges were used to help make all our cars shine. The children even used their phonic knowledge to write their own signs and price list. It was wonderful seeing the mathematical language being used, charging money and even talking about change. Perhaps over the Easter Holiday you could set up your own car wash at home!

Branching out...

Year 3 have had a busy week this week, with a new Computing unit in between preparations for the Way of the Cross.

Having convinced the children that databases are exciting(!), we endeavoured to live up to our word, by introducing them to the world of branching databases. Thankfully, the children agreed and have enjoyed a week of understanding all the different aspects of a branching database, from finding questions with 'Yes' or 'No' answers to sorting objects by different attributes.

The week culminated in the transferral of their physical dinosaur database, written in their books, to an online database. This was met with a lot of frustration initially, followed by some fantastic teamwork and perseverance, with the children managing to create their database online by the end of the lesson.

Well done Year 3 - now you're such database experts, we'll be putting you to work in the School Office in no time!

Fully Booked

This week's Gospel theme is 'Celebrating' and Year 6 have certainly had many achievements to shout about this term! The children have worked hard to hone their writing skills, speed up their arithmetic and make links within their Science. They have worked tirelessly to understand how the Gospel theme each week relates to their lives and have shown a real appreciation of historical times, namely Baghdad during the Islamic Golden Age. Certain children this year have impressed us greatly with their incredible commitment to reading and we would like to take this opportunity to celebrate them. What an achievement! Well done to Matthew, Francesco, Benny, Hannah, Daniel, Ndidi and Natalia- keep it up Year 6!

Show Time!

The children in Year 2 were delighted to finally perform their puppet shows to children in Reception this week.

They have been working on this project with the intention to produce a show for the younger children. They researched fairy stories to help their performances and then worked as a team to finalise the details. The reception children welcomed the treat and offered much encouragement for our performers!

Mastering Mouse Pads

Year 1 have been practising our computing skills again this week. We were challenged with the question, 'What is technology?' and were amazed to find out that technology is anything made by people to help us. Even things like a pencil sharpener are technology!

We then focused on the parts of the computer, in particular the mouse. We already knew, from previous Computing lessons, that using a mousepad on a Chromebook is very challenging. So, using a paint app, we set to work creating interesting pictures, practising our mouse skills of dragging and clicking. A little bit of perseverance and a dose of determination later, and the creations were looking remarkable! Well done Year 1 - technology can be complicated but we are getting to grips with it now!

The Way of the Cross

Our thanks to all the children from Years 1 - 6 who so sensitively and solemnly performed their stations for The Way of the Cross this week. It was a very beautiful and moving tribute to the events of Holy Week.

Nursery's Easter Story

The Nursery children have been listening to and acting out 'The Easter Story' this week. The story narrates how Jesus was arrested by the Roman authorities because he claimed to be the ‘Son of God’. He was sent to death by crucifixion and his resurrection three days later marks the occasion of Easter.
