ELA:
We will be reading a variety of texts, both narrative and informational.
We will have a novel study during each quarter of the school year.
Students will continue to grow and develop their writing skills through various writing assignments, with opinion essays being a major focus.
Grammar and vocabulary will be taught every week in each text that we read and in every writing assignment as well.
Social Studies:
We will work with units in geography, economics, and U.S. history.
We will have many class projects and field trips.
Students will present and debate on 5th grade topics.
Rewards
We love to celebrate positive behavior! As a class, students can earn points by being great leaders and positive examples. For every 5 points we will celebrate by choosing a class reward from the menu of choices.
5th graders will each be a part of a team. Teams can earn points during activities in both classes throughout the week. The team with the most points can choose one reward from the menu.
Redirection Procedures
Verbal reminders of rules and redirection, positive reinforcement of on target behavior.
Sign the “I Forgot the Rules” book and walk 3 laps at recess (each signature equals 3 laps).
Parents will be contacted after 3 warrants a phone call home.
Homework
Math workbook problems, review science and religion study guides- Monday-Thursday.
Language Arts and Social Studies-Monday, Tuesday, and Thursdays.
Missing homework will be completed during recess. Parent signatures on tests are required and will be deemed as homework. Students will have one binder, with dividers for each subject. Their agenda and orange takehome folder will be in their binders.

All grades will be updated weekly via FACTS.
Additionally, assignments will come home to the Take Home folder in their binder.The folder has a “Keep at Home” and a “Return to School” side. Please check these folders for important information, graded assignments, and/or homework assignments to be completed and returned.
Parent signatures are required for tests using the communication folder.
Please empty the “Keep at Home” side of the folder weekly.
Snacks
Students may bring a healthy snack and a water bottle each day. Donations of snacks are greatly appreciated but please do not send hot chips, donuts, or cookies aside from special occasions. Crackers, granola bars, Goldfish, pretzels, etc. are welcome! Healthy, limited ingredients snacks are the best for our children.
Birthdays are special occasions that we love to celebrate! Students will receive a Nonuniform Day and are welcome to bring in a treat for classmates if you would like. We sing Happy Birthday & enjoy the treats at recess.

Technology
Students will be assigned a number at the beginning of the year. This number will correspond with the number on the Chromebook. All policies and procedures for the Chromebooks will be discussed in class. A Chromebook Contract will follow. Students may use a wireless mouse and chromebook cover if warranted. The plastic covers are fun because they can personalize it!
Headphones: Students will need headphones for the computer programs.
Cell Phones and Smart Watches: Cell phones are not allowed per the Handbook. If a child has a cell phone or a they need to check it in with the front office before coming to class each morning.
