Because of the recent changes we have had to make to our society due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, there has been a significant spike in suicide attempt rates, specifically in Caucasian adolescent females between the ages of 12-17. This is most likely due to the sudden state of seclusion from society we now have to adhere to to ensure the safety of the public from the spread of the virus. Additionally, there was also a severance between patients and mental health professionals because of the lack of resources needed to efficiently continue mental health care. This not only affected mental health professionals but all other forms of medical care, therefore, complicating all medical needs. An event of this magnitude, that needed so many precautions to be taken, has been compared to the Spanish Influenza in 1918 that killed about 50 million people and is considered to be one of the deadliest viruses we have seen. Though COVID-19 has not taken such a toll on the number of deaths as the Spanish Influenza did, we have had to undergo difficult situations to protect people from being infected by the virus. Considering all of this, it makes sense that these teenagers would feel stressed, and no outlet for these feelings would cause many problems to arise, as we have seen. Though there have been many improvements made to the online healthcare system, and our lifestyle has begun to return to normalcy, there has still been a rise in the suicide attempt rates within the US. What can we do to fix our current problem? Is there some underlying favor that we have yet to consider? These are questions that we need to solve in order to stop this trend and return to a sense of normalcy.
