The battle of Surigao Strait was a devastating failure for the Japanese, while being a complete success for the Americans. The Japanese forces were decimated, losing nine ships and thousands of sailors. Yet, the Americans lost only a few dozen men. The Japanese navy would be further crippled and less able to fight. The Americans turned the tide in night battles, where the Japanese previously dominated. It was the last true ship to ship battle in history.
