Urban Tree Cover

Brian Nguyen

Growing up next to the Middlesex Fells in Melrose, Massachusetts, I developed an fascination with trees from an early age. Aware of the urgency of the climate crisis, I combined by knowledge of trees with the push for sustainable development by research the effects of increasing urban tree cover in cities. While urban tree cover may not come to mind as the most pressing environmental issue, it is incredibly relevant in our communities.

Literature Review

As part of the secondary research process, I explored how increasing urban tree cover influences three environmental aspects of the urban landscape: heat, runoff, and air quality. In this literature review, I walk through various papers written by authors across the world, from Baro Fransec's study on pollution sequestration of urban trees in Barcelona, Spain to Jasmine Thom's analysis of the relationship between tree physiology and urban hydrology.

Urban tree cover -- env and social justice-1.pdf

For my final product, I combined the information that I learned from my secondary and primary research into a presentation on the intersection between urban tree cover, environmental justice, and social justice. I tailored this presentation for the Multicultural Affairs and Community Development Student Advisory Council (MACD, SAC), a group that is invested in social justice initiatives on and off campus. Attached below ts the produced that I created and the accompanying script.
