Asian Mental Health

About Me: Ajay Vempati

My name is Ajay Vempati and I have always been interested in raising awareness for mental health. I became interested in Asian Mental Health when while scrolling through Instagram I came upon a post that said "Asian Americans are less likely to seek mental health treatment." I was dumbfounded that I had never heard that before. Thus, I began researching the causes for the discrepancy in mental health treatment and began looking at how it was being addressed. This website page aims to show you my research findings and what I think is a unique way to normalize speaking out regarding mental health and its treatment.

Although mental health has gained more acknowledgment and resources recently, Asian Americans, as a whole, are still behind. Research shows that Asian Americans are not seeking treatment at the same rate as other Americans. The major reasons for these are stigmas stemming from cultural pressures and the model minority myth. Although there are many organizations trying to fix this, there is never going to be one answer.

 Final Product

Using what organizations NAMI and SAMHIN do, this product takes inspiration from the Harkness learning model and attempts to make mental health an open discussion among peers. This discussion, unlike traditional discussions, is not led by anyone rather students take turns talking to each other. This product aims to remove the taboo label mental health gets and make it a normal conversation, so that no one has to feel ashamed of what they are going through.
