Reading: We have started our first class novel, The One and Only Ivan. We will mainly read and discuss this book together in class, but there may occasional assigned reading for homework. There will be a brief assessment of comprehension approximately every 25 pages. These are not typically announced
Vocabulary: We are in unit 1 of the Vocabulary book. There will be a spelling test on Friday, September 5 and a vocabulary test on Friday, September 12. The words for this chapter are listed below. You can use the vocabulary site linked below to look at definitions, synonyms, antonyms, and more for each word. Students are expected to make vocabulary flash cards with the word and a picture that illustrates it on one side and the parts of speech, definitions, synonyms, and antonyms on the other.

Mentor Sentence: Every week, we study one sentence out of a picture book. We will examine the sentence through a different lens each day, making observations, defining parts of speech, improving the sentence, and even rewriting it. On Fridays we will take an assessment on the sentence. This week's sentence comes from Fireboat:

Grammar: We are in unit 1 of the Grammar book. This unit focuses on sentences. We are currently studying the four kinds of sentences (declarative, interrogative, imperative, exclamatory). There will be a quiz on lesson 2 (complete subjects and predicates) on Thursday, September 11.
