We are so excited to kick off March is Reading Month this year with our theme, Reading Saves the Day! We have a variety of reading adventures, character building ideas, STEM activities, and a fun "Superhero of the Week" guessing game to play daily. Plus, you'll be able to hear about some real-life superheroes through stories that will be shared each week.
In an attempt to keep things simple yet focused on reading, students will be given a superhero identity card that they will use to keep track of their reading this month. The choices for upper elementary will focus on literary genres. The lower elementary choices will include genres as well as fun reading adventures. Each week, these will be collected and stamped. Raffle tickets will be given for each square completed and students will be able to put their name into the drawing for various reading-related prizes (books, books, and more books)!
Classrooms will work to build positive character traits through powering up a classroom shield. Each classroom teacher will be given a paper shield to hang inside or outside of her classroom along with a set of 12 badges. The badges can be placed on the shield when your class demonstrates any of the following superhero traits: curiosity, critical thinking, teamwork, courage, kindness, and creativity. You'll find some ideas here, but feel free to determine how and when your class can earn these badges. Specials teachers and support staff will be given "Power Up" badges that they can also give to your class when positive character traits have been shown. This is not a competition, but should instead be a way to focus on positive behaviors in the classroom and throughout the school.
All of the resources you'll need can be found on this site and/or on the media center page under the heading, March is Reading Month Resources. Please feel free to contact Connie, Jen, Jo-Anne, or Mary with any questions you have.
