We read "Our Class is a Family" By: Shannon Olson
After reading our story, we discussed what the story was about. We talked about how we have families at home, and how they all are similar and different. How we can be a class family at school together. I want the children to view our class as a family, and feel safe and happy with us. We also made a chart. I had the children answer my question "How can we be kind?" These were the answers they gave me. They were so thoughtful and sweet! Such smart cookies!
Sharing and being nice
Saying nice words
Saying hi to your friends
Loving people
Give a friend a gift
Playing with friends when they ask you to
Don't talk over your friends
Don't hurt your friends feelings
Help someone when they have a boo boo
I wanted the children to think for themselves and hear their thoughtful responses. We came up with 9 answers
Llama Llama back to school by: Anna Dewdney
I love the llama llama books! And today we read about the experience that llama llama had on their first day of school. They dreaded the summer had to end, and I am sure we can all relate to that feeling! We read that llama llama helped another friend who was brand new to their school.
I asked the children what they thought of this story. I also asked if they thought llama llama was being a kind new friend to the new student. We talked about the kindness that was shown to the new friend. We also discussed how we felt on our first day of school yesterday. I loved the honesty the children gave me. And even though a few friends said they were nervous, they said they are enjoying school! This morning we discussed that today was a new day for new experiences! So far everyone is playing nicely, including one another, and trying their best!
This story is very relatable and at their age its a great example to show them that its okay to be nervous, excited for school. And that making new friends and having a new teacher is a good thing!
Today we read "The Dot" by: Peter H Reynolds
What is International Dot Day? International Dot Day is celebrated by adults and children for boosting courage so that their creative potential is released. It is a great day to connect and collaborate, and also to celebrate self-expression. After reading our book of the day, our class colored in their own chameleon and next week we will cover the dots with pom poms. We will hang them up for the school to see with the book cover and description of this special day.
Pre-K 4 had a great time learning all about apples! We did apple mathematics activities, we learned what the inside of an apple looks like and what are the parts called in an apple. Pre-K did a test testing experiment and tried red, yellow, and green apples. We went over our 5 senses with identifying what an apple taste likes, feels like, looks like, sounds like, and smells like! Our class also read "If you give a dog a donut" and enjoyed an apple donut day! We made apple donuts by cutting the apples into a donut shape, cutting the middle part out and either covering our apple slices with caramel or frosting. Then the children decorated their apple donuts with different toppings. It was a tasty treat
