St Modan's HS Transition

S1 Curriculum

Broad General Education

Curriculum for Excellence is built on the values of wisdom, justice, compassion and integrity. It is recognised that all children and young people should develop skills for life, skills for learning and skills for work which will prepare them for a world which is evolving at a very fast pace.

Our S1-3 pupils continue on their journey through the Broad General Education and our curriculum is designed to ensure adequate breadth and depth alongside opportunities for inter-disciplinary learning.

During S1 and S2 we offer a broad range of courses in 8 curricular areas: Mathematics, Languages (English and Modern Languages), Social Subjects, Science, Technologies, Expressive Arts, Health and Wellbeing and Religious and Moral Education.

The following subjects will be offered within these curricular areas:

English Mathematics Science

Religious Education Social Subjects Art & Design

Music Physical Education Home Economics French/Spanish

Technology (incl Computing) Drama Health and Wellbeing

The emphasis at St Modan’s is very much on pupils as individuals - each moving at a suitable pace to master content and skills.

3Rs- Our Expectations

We have high expectations for our young people and work hard to provide an environment which is structured and allows them to thrive.

We consistently refer to the 3R's in our classrooms and interactions with our young people.

We expect all young people to be:

  • Ready to learn, to try and to be creative.

  • Respectful of self, peers, staff, learning and equipment.

  • Responsible for their own actions, safety, environment and learning.

We recognise and celebrate the actions of those young people who regularly go 'above and beyond' these expectations, through our Celebrating Success strategies. Young people get recognition through praise postcards, 'hot chocolate' invitations and phone calls home.

Extra-curricular Clubs and Activities

Although the last twelve months have been very different due to Covid restrictions, usually we run a wide variety of extra-curricular clubs and activities. Clubs vary on a year by year basis.

Sports clubs include: football, basketball, badminton, dance, hockey, athletics, gymnastics, circuit training, table tennis, netball.

Music activities include: choirs, ukulele club, string and woodwind group, Big Band.

Creative Arts and other activities include: film club, doodle club, textiles club, Anima group, S1 Board Games, chess club, library lunchtime club, S1 Chaplaincy, Buddy lunches, Tech and Computing club, robotics.

In addition, we usually have a school show every June and a cabaret in February. All pupils are invited and encouraged to get involved.

The clubs vary every year and depend on demand and interest. A number of activities take place at lunchtimes and others are after school. A young person can collect bus tokens from the office to allow them to travel home after a club that takes place at the end of the school day.

St Modan's HS Uniform

At St Modan's, we pride ourselves on having very high standards in our school uniform.

The uniform leaflet is available here and has been uploaded to the website: http://stmodans.co.uk/wp-content/

uploads/2020/05/Uniform-Leaflet-for-Parents-May-2020.pdf

As is the case with many things during the pandemic, we have had to make some changes to our uniform guidelines. We introduced a school hoodie and school zipper to complement the uniform and offer more warmth due to enhanced ventilation across the school.

We also accepted any plain rain/winter jacket (as opposed to a school uniform jacket) as pupils are required to spend all social times outside. We recognised that a number of families were struggling to purchase both a school jacket and a weekend/casual jacket at this time, so the rules on school jackets in the school grounds were changed.

However, we remain firm that only a plain rain/warm jacket is acceptable and sports hoodies, denim jackets, etc. are not permitted. In addition, only formal black school shoes should be worn.

Our uniform supplier is:

Scotcrest, 153 West Stirling Street, Alva, FK12 5EL

First Aid and Medication

At St Modan's we have a number of trained First Aiders. We do not have a full time school nurse. If this service is required, we would make a referral through the Forth Valley NHS School Nursing Service.

First Aid Support: Trained staff will support if a child becomes unwell in school by administering basic first aid. If the condition cannot be dealt with by a first aid response, a parent/carer will be contacted or in an emergency an ambulance will be called.

If the pupil is generally unwell, the parent/carer will be contacted to collect the child from school.

Medication: If your child requires regular prescribed medication- ie tablets, creams etc- you should contact the school office and complete a form to give first aid staff permission to store and administer the medication as required. A private first aid room can be provided for a pupil if they require space and privacy for any medical need.

*Please note we are not allowed to hold or administer any medications that are not prescribed by a doctor, this includes paracetamol.

Asthma Inhalers: At high school, most young people carry their own inhalers in their school bag. However, we would encourage all pupils to store a spare inhaler in our medical supplies cupboard. This can be handed into the main reception and a medical form completed by an adult. .

Allergy and Diabetes supplies: If your child has an allergy and is required to carry antihistamine or an epi-pen, we would ask that you contact the school office prior to your child's start date to ensure that we have supplies available for emergency situations.

If your child is Diabetic, we will arrange a visit to the school prior to the start date, in August, to discuss the situation with first aid staff and drop off any medication or supplies prior to your child starting at St Modan's.

Toilet passes: If your child has a medical condition and requires access to the toilet more regularly, we can provide a Medical Pass to allow immediate release from class. This information is usually shared through transition meetings with primary schools, but if you have any concerns, please contact us by email and we will ensure this information is recorded.

Every year, you will receive a Data Form to be updated with all the correct details about your child. Please ensure that all medical conditions are recorded on this form. Any queries, please contact us to discuss them.

Placing Requests

St Modan's HS is the catchment school for all Roman Catholic young people from Stirling, Clackmannanshire and West Falkirk, regardless of the primary school attended. If your child attends one of our Learning Community primary schools, then the school will let us know. Our Learning Community Schools are St Mary's, St Margaret's, Our Lady's, St Mungo's, St Bernadette's and St Patrick's.

If your child is baptised Catholic and attends any other primary school, please ensure that you have informed your child's primary school of your intention to transition to St Modan's and please contact our school office to ensure that we have your details on our mailing list.

If your child is a placing request to St Modan's please ensure that you have done three things:

Contacted St Modan's school office to share your contact details

Informed your child's primary school

Completed a placing request form with Stirling Council. The link required for this is:

https://www.stirling.gov.uk/learning-education/schools/enrolling-your-child-at-school/placing-requests/placing-request-form/

Lockers

Every year we are asked about lockers. Unfortunately, we do not have enough lockers for every new S1 pupil. In order to be as fair as we can in the allocation of lockers, we have a Locker Protocol saved on our website:

For further details, please read the protocol document : http://stmodans.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/Locker-Protocol.pdf

However, we do make an exception and prioritise any young people with a medical condition that would benefit from the use of a locker.

Parent Pay

You will receive information directly from Stirling Council about activating a Parent Pay account or transferring an account from another Stirling school. This will allow you to pay any expenses at St Modan’s, eg money on your child’s lunch card, should you wish them to access the canteen in school.

Free Meals and Uniform Entitlement

If your child received free meals in primary school or you think you may be eligible for a free meal or uniform support, please ensure that you have completed any paperwork for Free School Meals or Clothing grants as soon as you can.

Regardless of your home authority, you should complete the Stirling Council application. This normally goes 'live' in June for the next academic session. When we get this information we send it out to parents/carers and publicise it on our social media channels.

This is the link to the Stirling Council website. It is worth keeping an eye on this page for any updates:
